Basics:

- Celebrated November 1st

- It's a time of remembering, coming together, and honoring those who have died

- Originated from indigenous tribes who believed death should be faced with bravery and not with fear (usually mocking death)

- Visit grave sites and place candles, food, decorations, and such

- There's a special bread that's baked on that day, "Pan Muerto" (Dead Bread). Usually in the shapes of skulls.

- Other sweets like candy are made and sold, usually colorful candy skulls.

Just since the last 5 years, trick or treating, and dressing up in a scary costum has started at Playa Zipolite, Oaxaca, Southern Mexico.

Shrines to dead relatives are very dramatic ... and very special to the families who build them.

Oaxaca City, Oaxaca has many scheduled celebrations during the day of the dead. Search Google for: Oaxaca Day Of The Dead .... you should be able to find all the info you need or want to know.

My experience with the Day of the Dead celebration is very family and community oriented.

It's celebrated on November 1st and 2nd. The first is for baby's and kids and the 2nd is for adults.

Normally people, put altars on their houses which include first of all, pictures of their family and friends who have passed, it includes the things that the person liked, food, candy, cigarettes, booze ( for real ), fruit and anything that can fit there, like cd's, toys for the kids. And most important a glass of water, that's because the tradition says that when the dead visit their altar, they are thirsty from their journey and last but not least candles, to light their way.

There are two special things for those days a flower called Xenpaxuchil (it's orange) and Pan de muerto (sweet bread). Which are used to decorate the altar.

This is a fun and interesting celebration on November 1(infants and children) & 2 (for all)

The day of the dead is dedicated to honor those gone, but not forgotten. A celebration to transform grief into acceptance, where the living invite the spirits to return home for a few hours of laughter, tears and memories. To celebrate people make an "Altar de Muertos" (Death altar) to honor and invite the death for a day of celebration. This Altar should have:

Cenpazuchil flowers; that means the eternal life of the death.
Calaveras de azÃºcar (sugar skulls); to make their dead more sweet.
Papel picado (tissue paper cut-outs);
Pan de muertos (breath of the death); to erpresent the food needed for survival.
Agua (water); to quench the thirst and for purification.
Sal (salt); to season on the food and for purification.
Velas (Candles); to lighten their way home.
Foto del difunto (photo of the honored death person); as representation of the person you're honoring and inviting back home.
