So many wrong answers...
Are you driving? All you need is your driver's license and proof of US citizenship (birth certificate).
Are you flying? You will need a passport. |

No you don't! Common misconception is that you already need a passport... best bet right now till June of 2009 is to take your birth certificate or Naturalization papers along with a state ID and they will let you through... If your not a citizen, then you should have the legal papers that are required to come back. Also if you are a citizen, either by birth or naturalization, you CANNOT be denied entrance to the US. The only issue is that they are going to hold you there until you can prove that your a citizen, and that might take hours.... |

You do not need a pass port if traveling by land or sea. You only need a pass port if you fly at least for now. Belive me, I travel all the way to Mexico city with my DL and birth certificate. If you feel unsure, check the TJ consulate and they have the most up to date information there. |

Get the passport. You can get by with photo ID and driver's license right now, but just don't fool around, get the document now, its a great ID if you lose others. |

Yes you do. Unless Cali has changed their drivers license like Washington state has - from what I understand is that the border states are suppose to change them. The licenses are going to have an extra seal that shows you are a citizen stamped on the front. They say it's fraud proof. So call your DMV and see if they have them yet - WA just started this year. |
