Traveling From Texas to Mexico?

I'm planning my first vacation in 4 years and we'll be roadtripping from Minnesota to Corpus Christi/Brownsville area and want to continue on into Mexico, specifically Mazatlan. We haven't decided on whether we are going to continue to drive ourselves or take a bus. I'm having a hard time finding bus routes to Mazatlan. What do you suggest and what bus routes would we need to take? If we drove, what route do you suggest and how long would it take?

Thank you so much!

P.S. the trip is for the second week in May 2006

one suggestion or advice when you go deep into Mexico pass San Luis Potosi , you have to pass thru the sierra madre a mountain range that that is almost 1-2 drive time sometime the cloud form in the roadway at high elevation. I do not want to scare you but the people from the area are familiar with the turn and curves in the mountain , they well pass you even if there is a cliff on the side which there always is.going up ill you will /might on drive 15-2 5mph when you pass that "hump" you will have to drive applying the brakes
so if you drive be sure your car is serviced/checked before coming to Mexico again just some warning about this area sometime you have the mountain side on your left then on your right some time you see the cars the size of hotwheels at a distance above or below. it beautiful scenery but dangerous roadway

I don't know if SuperNathan works for car insurance or not but I think he knows nothing about driving your own car into Mexico. First piece of advice: Ask for info to AAA. Most of people driving their cars have gotten the right information from that association, both road maps and car insurance (they are the same companies as in the US).
I'm from Mazatlan so I know you must enter Mexico through Brownsville. From there you head to Monterrey, Saltillo, Durango and Mazatlan. It takes about a day for the entire distance if you just stop for gas and food. Check the link below. It's the page of a magazine devoted entirely to tourism AND run and edited by American Citizens who have become permanent residents in Mazatlan. When you open their page, click on their FORUM, at the left options bar. There you can ask DIRECTLY to the hundreds of gringos living in our city. They will be happy to help you to find the best choice. Ask them anything. It will cost you NOTHING. See you in Mazatlan soon.

This site shows the Bus Companies that take you to Mazatlan, like PRIMERA PLUS and ETN.

Hope you speak some spanish. Here are some useful phrases:

Cuánto cuesta eso? - How much does it cost?
Qué linda es usted! - You are such a nice girl!
Vete al demonio - Go to Hell!

I don't know about transportation but the trip from Larado to Mazatlan took us 2 days, we went thru the mountains. I wouldn't do it again...it's very dangerous. FLY from Brownsville if you have to go.

I frankly don't know much about mexico but I would make one suggestion to you, I am a licenced insurance agent and the chances are that your auto coverage will not carry over into mexico.

In general (unless you want to buy incredibly expensive, not so good coverage for your car once you get into mexico) the best advice is to leave your car in the US and take some other type of transportation in.

I would get in contact with traveling agencies adn tour guides from Brownsville...They would better know what would be best..I live in San Antonio, and agree don't take your car, try to find groups traveling your same destination.
