Traveling in Mexico, languge barrier etc?

Im going to be crossing over the border into Mexico while im in the United States in a couple of months.

I have been to Tijuana before and loved it so I want to travel further south and all the way over to Cancun; all im worried about is the language as I only speak English, will I be able to get around with the language barrier? do the locals speak much English?

Any tips, or places I should visit also would be appreciated?

The lower classes (indiginous people) speak poor or no english

Since Can Cun is a tourist destination a lot of people will speak english, even the natives

Can Cun is way too crowded and too much like any other tourist destination in the U.S. so I'd avoid being there too long, instead visit:

Isla Mujeres (a small island) and go snorkling in Garrafon
Tulum (Mayan ruins with a beach)
Xcaret (eco tourism park with lagoons, you can snorkle there)
Chichen Itza (Mayan pyramids)

but Playa del Carmen was my favorite, a bus can take you there, it is far more laid back than Can Cun and the beaches won't be as crowded

Hi, I am an American who lives in Mexico and I speak very little English. I would advice you do not travel alone, you really need some person with you whom speaks Spanish. You will be passing many check points and trafficking areas threw out the entire country and once you are passed the border and not in large tourist ares not many people do speak English. It is hard for me to get by with only speaking a little Spanish. Mexico is a wonderful country, and you will have a fantastic time, but please be careful. If you have any questions specifically please do ask. I have a home in Monterrey and a home in San Luis Potosi so I know what I am talking about. Try taking a quick course on basic Spanish for 4 weeks at a local university if you have the time, sometimes they are offered free, but no more than $200. Good Luck.

Don't worry, there's a lot of people who speak English in Cancun, their main source of income is tourism.
I would recommend isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen and Holbox Island among others and at lest one sinkhole.

If you go any resort town in Mexico (Cancun, etc.) you will be fine as far as language goes. In the larger cities the citizens are taught English but as you travel around Mexico there are no guarantees that everywhere you go you'll be able to talk to someone in English. Make sure to take a detailed map and study your travel path before you leave the U.S. You can never be too careful in a foreign country so take as many precautions as possible.

You should definitely go to Puerto Vallarta. Even though I like to go off the beaten path I still love resort areas. Puerto Vallarta has everything Cancun has (shopping, night clubs, beaches, etc) without the crowds. There are small villages to visit in the area and plenty of adventure tours.

Cancun is very beautiful ... if there are people who speak English

It is very easy to get around and language should not be a problem. People working in airports, bus stations and hotels speak english or at least should help you get you going. If you are in major cities (Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey, Puebla, Cancun) your best bet is to ask young folks -teens mostly- or even better ask souvenir shop salesmen. Once you reach Cancun you will notice everybody speaks english and even billboards are in english.. Have a good trip

In general, no matter what country you're going to, it's a good idea to learn a few key phrases in the country's language. That being said, for Mexico it depends on where you go in Mexico and how touristy the area is. If you go to smaller cities and villages you will probably not find as many people who speak English as in the bigger more tourist orientated cities.

I would say it's going to be tough if you don't know any Spanish to travel out of the mega tourist areas. I would advise taking a beginner's Spanish class unless you're going to spend your entire time in the Cancun area, or flying from one big city to another. Especially, if you are planning on doing extensive traveling around the country. A lot of Mexicans do speak English, but many do not. If you're at the bus station trying to get a bus ticket to your next destination, or asking for directions at a convenience store, it's best if you know some Spanish because you cannot assume that the person trying to help you does.

Many big cities here in Mexico offer week long, or longer, Spanish courses if you don't want to take a Spanish class before you go.

In terms of places to visit, the colonial cities of Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende and Zacatecas are all gorgeous and good to visit if you're interested in Mexico's colonial history. Of course Mexico City, and Teotihuacan. If you want more Mayan ruins, you might want to head down to Oaxaca (Monte Alban), Puebla, Villahermosa (near to Palenque) and the Yucatan. I have not yet been to Oaxaca but everybody I know who has raves about it. Guadalajara is supposed to be a beautiful city with some good museums. The state Guadalajara is in is also the birthplace of tequila. If you go to Cancun you *must* go to Chichen Itza. Other good ruins that you hear a lot about in that area though I have not been to them myself are Tulum and Uxmal.

Mexico is a beautiful and wonderful place, and if you learn a bit of Spanish beforehand you have the opportunity of really improve your Spanish while in Mexico.

Come to the PHILIPPINES, instead because most of us understand and can speak the king's language... We have many tourist spots here and Boracay is one if you love the beach... the Banaue Rice Terraces is also good if you love nature...

Learn the basics. Get Rosette Stone in Spanish to learn some quick basics.
Tourists areas will have Mexican people who speak English. But if you go off to the more rural areas, people there will rarely speak English.

There are many people who speak english over there. but i sugest learning the basics. like please [[por favor]] thank you [[gracias]] and bathroom [[banllo]] :D get a translator book quick. but over all driving there is a great experience me and my family do it all the time. and cancun is a torist place so there are a lot of english speaking people.
