Tulum or Akumal? |
I am taking my girl to Mexico in February, and we have decided to spend the first 4 nights in Playa Del Carmen to enjoy some nice beaches, restaurants, and night life. After that however, we would like to move to a very laid back, great "sit on the beach and do nothing but sunbath and swim" type of place. I have pretty much narrowed it down to either Tulum or Akumal. Which place would you recommend for the nicer beach and water? Small waves for beginning surfers and maybe some kite surfing lessons is a plus!
Thanks! |

Personally, i think the beach at Tulum is nicer then at Akumal. At Tulum you will have white sand and therer are also opportunities to surf if you want. I've seen some Scuba diving people there and i think that they can give you some kite lessons too!
Enjoy! |

Tulum has definitely better beach. If you do not have transport it is a bit tricky to go from hotel to town and thus limits your options for eating and drinking. Tulum is better if you prefer beach and a more relaxing atmosphere. Check with these guys for activities and or acommodation: http://papayaplaya.com/
Akumal has a killer lagoon for snorkeling. Akumal also offers a wider selection of places to eat and drink within walking distance. Akumal is your place if you want to do lots of snorkeling and / or prefer to do some socializing.
Neither place has good waves for surfing. In fact there are no good places in the Riviera Maya for surfing. For kite surfing lessons and still have some good beach you can consider: Puerto Morelos. It is just south of Cancun and north of Playa del Carmen. It is small enough to just chill and has tons of good beaches.

I would say hands down Tulum. it has very nice beaches and very friendly people. Plus it has the ruins which i would highly recommend checking out.
I actually spent about 3 months in playa and it is one of the funnest cities in mexico. i would recommend checking out mamitas beach, the market places at night, and for alot of fun go south about 10 minutes from playa and go to the xcaret ecological park. You can swim with dolphins, many different snorking trips, underground caves that you can snorkel in and a beautiful beach alot with many other things.
have a wonderful trip.
p.s. if you go to the markets at night bargaining will come in handy. |
