I find Mexico is no more dangerous for tourist than south central L.A. or Harlem. Drink too much alcohol, abuse drugs, flash money and act obnoxious, see how long you last in any slum in the world. Use common sense, be aware of your surroundings and be polite, you will be fine. Their customs and social values are different from yours. If a merchant tries to rip you off, walk away, don't raise a fuss. Remember you are a guest in someone elses country and as such don't enjoy the rights you have in the U.S. |

People everywhere (tourists included) can get shot or killed or hurt. People everyday in the US get shot or killed--does that mean you're going to flee?
I heard of a case a few years back whereby a German tourist in Santa Monica was shot and killed by a mugger trying to get his wallet because he didn't hand his wallet over quickly enough (because he didn't speak English and therefore didn't understand what he was being told, but that's another story).
You would find it absurd based on such an incident to say California is no longer safe for tourists because a tourist was shot and killed in Santa Monica. |

yes it's safe , you just have to remeber that your in another country and their ways are different, lose the attatude and show respect and you'll do fine, i found Mexico to be very friendly and the people very giving and warm,if you see trouble go the other way just as you would do at home , most people that get into trouble there , seem to forget where they are and foget what to do when things happen |

Unless you're in the drug trade, there's no more to fear in Mexico than anywhere else. Whenever a tourist is killed in Mexico, and it does happen, it makes banner headlines north of the border. Whenever a tourist is killed in the USA, you probably won't hear about it unless it was in your hometown.
P.S. I lived in Mexico for 10 years and we will probably retire there. |

I live in the state of Veracruz< Mexico ( I am American), and it is perfectly safe. Yes, occasionally, a tourist is hurt or killed in a tourist area or along the border. Tourists are hurt and killed in U.S. cities and other cities around the world every day. Use your commomn sense, don't do risky behaviors, stay out of risky areas and you will be fine. When I lived in Colorado, women were killed in the parking lot at the big mall one mile from my house...people did not stop ging to the mall. |

Safe as can be. Lived there 3 years with no problems. Just that I am not a drug trafficker so no one was out to kill me. If you are a plain old tourist, you'll do just fine. Use common sense. Just do the math. How many tourists GO to Mexico every year vs. how many get shot??? The mexicans don't want anything to happen to you - It would be BAD FOR BUSINESS! |

You don't say why they got shot in the first place. Tourists are the most protected people in Mexico. And as far as your source, it doesn't mean anything to me! |

If you go on vac in mexico, stay in a resort area and don't leave unless it's absolutley neccesary. If you do head out into the mainland bring lots of us currency to buy your way out of trouble and be armed or hire a bodygaurd. Helps a ton to speak spanish too. There are gonna be a ton of people who say this isn't true but they're just lucky or speak spanish and know some people. Watch your back! |
