i live in Tijuana and i can tell you that it's hard to cash a travelers check and credit cards are taken in most businesses and are safe now so you should be o.k. with that or maybe you could bring some travelers checks and a credit card.
i think visa is your best bet since most businesses take it.
just remember that should you need to take money out of an ATM in mexico you will only be getting it in pesos (mex. currancy) so just keep in mind that 20 dlls is about 200 pesos i'm telling you this because i've seen americans going to ATM's and punching 20 and think they're getting dollars so they get confused, the least amount of money you can take out of an ATM here is 50 pesos which a little less than 5 dollars.

atms will give you the best exchange rate, travelers checks are antiquated

im thinkin travlers checks because if anything happens to them they can be replaced if you loose them

Both cards are welcome in mexico, not every where accept american express specially in small business. Visa every where.

Traveler checks are really not necessary nowadays in Mexico. Given the location you're going to, I would say to carry little cash and just use your VISA card (AMEX is not taken everywhere). Even if you don't take a prepaid one, just take the necessary precautions (including having phone numbers handy in case it does get stolen or lost).

I have been to Mexico 3 times in the last 2 years and have never used travelers checks. Most places take credit cards, and if they don't, ATMs are readily available. I just returned from Playa del Carmen today, and found that almost all places took Visa, while only some places took American Express (its commercials are misleading--MANY places worldwide do not accept American Express, and I've had great luck using Visa). Prepaid cards are a great way to go. Good luck!
