Was I out of line, when I told a flirtatious Mexican waiter, "Eres Coqueto!"?

I was with an american group (all of us college kids) (myself a Spanish speaker, once-lived-in-Mexico American girl) at a Mexican restaurant, this past week. I spoke with the waiter in Spanish, and he was getting flirty. He then switched to English, and asked in front of the guys at my table, which of the guys were my boyfriend. I got embarrased (seeing as I have a crush on one of them) and then in Spanish, said, "Eres Coqueto!". He countered with, "porque", at which point I blushed, looked down, and he left. Everyone at my table said, "What did you tell him?????" I was like, "I called him a flirt!" They thought it was mean, too direct, and hurtful. Was I out of line, given the Mexican culture, and how flirty and bold Mexican men can be?
Note: I LOVE Mexicans, though..

It was probably the perfect thing for a gringa to say! Good job.

"Eres coqueto" is NOT a rude thing to say (and definitely not mean, direct and hurtful - especially if he WAS flirting!). You did fine. I agree with another commenter, if he asked you why, he wanted you to continue the flirty conversation.

No way. They love aggresive and upfront women.
Totally a cool comment.
He wanted you to counter with why you think he's being flirty with another flirty comment I bet.
Don't even think twice about it.

The other answers were so right... You did fine. And, he did want you to respond with another flirty comment... (creeme, me case con uno que se puso coqueto conmigo!) If you would have responded, though, he would have never let you alone!! He would have either made you fall for him or drive you crazy!

If you didn't like it, next time just simply ignore the comment. "Whatever! Are you going to bring our food?" or "No, but that big one on the end is my brother and you should see the last dude that hit on me in public!" Or, just simply speak only in english instead of spanish -- he didn't flirt with the others that were just speaking english, did he?

kerby
i would say so.

What does it really mean? " Eres Coqueto" ???
