He was born in Mexico and had a passion for drawing. He ended up taking painting classes and he essentially did both. He started out drawing, he did some self-portraits (probably did some other painting as well) but he eventually became more and more known for his murals.

Being there is a place named after him in Mexico (Museo Mural Diego Rivera, Mexico City, Distrito Federal, Mexico), I would definitely say since the word Mural is in the name, he was more a muralist than just a painter.
