You should get pesos in Mexico and not in your country.
You do not have to take a lot of cash as there are plenty of .A.T.M.s known as cajero auotomatico and you will get the rate that your bank in your country is giving on the day of the withdrawal plus a small usage fee for the use of the machine
Your first time in Mexico you are probably going to Cancun ?
If so they are at the airport and there are exchange houses that give you a fair rate.Things have changed and you no longer have to take a dangerous amount of cash or a lot in travelers checks

Most tourist areas will accept dollars. But only tourist areas. Anywhere else you need pesos.

Pesos are worth a little more than dollars so I always use pesos. Don't get your pesos at the airport! They will gouge you. There are plenty of places to get pesos. ATM fees can quickly add up. Make sure you know the value of Mexican money. Take one zero off any bill that has zeros, as an example 20 pesos is 2 dollars after removing the zero. 200 pesos is 20 dollars. A 10 peso coin is 1 dollar. Any other coins with one number, add a zero. A 1 is 10 cents, a 2 is 20 cents.

yea you should take both but it you only have dollars that is fine to cause there is places were they will change dollars for pesos
