It depends what you want to see and what you like and dislike . I have been to almost every state in Mexico .

Baja California is rough , deserted and beautiful in the south and cooler and crowded in the north .

The popular beach resorts of the Pacific Mazatlan and Acapulco are are hot and humid unless you travel in the late fall and winter . If you are sleeping in
an air conditioned suite and have a pool and cold beer then I guess this isn't critical . Puerto Vallarta is a smaller cleaner tourist trap with higher prices and a higher percentage of Americans.

I love the small towns , so my favorite beaches are San Quintin in northern Baja California and the deserted beaches north of La Paz . However , I did enjoy La Paz even though it is a bit crowded .

If you want to see the tourists go to Cabo San Lucas . Nice scenery , but not much Mexican culture left .

My favorite beach on the Pacific is Barra de Navidad . .

The interior spots to enjoy are Zacatecas , Guanajuato , Dolores Hidalgo , and the beautiful smaller towns in the states of Jalisco , Mexico and Michoacan .

Big cities: Stay clear of Mexico City . Guadalajara offers better big city options (Mariachi capitol) Monterrey (3rd largest) is a dusty industrial town Leon , GTO is the 4th largest city and the leather capitol of the country .

Michoacan has plenty of beautiful towns worth visiting but stay clear of the drug trade areas at night.
Oaxaca is primitive and full of indian culture .

The area of Cancun and Cozumel is now a tourist trap with some nice beaches to enjoy.

Cancun is really overrated! I would strongly suggest you go to Playa del Carmen..its about 20-30 miles from Cancun and everything is sooo much better there...especially the food and cleanliness! I have heard Cozumel is a very nice place to go...My fiance and I are going on a cruise to Cozumel and Cayman Islands for our honeymoon!

I heartily-second Puerto Vallarta - it's been our Mexican destination of choice since 2003.

We discovered each other (here in Canada) in Dec '02, and made our first trip (together) to Mexico three months later!! Several longer stays each year -- of 4-5 weeks per each -- since then.

We consider Vallarta our "home away from home" -- sunshine, warmth, natural beauty, culture, great food, and some of the most friendly people you could ever meet!!

Happy researching.

That really depends on what you are looking for. If it's beaches, I've been to Los Cabos, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta. Cabo has great beaches but is very Americanized and expensive. I have totally fallen in love with Puerto Vallarta which is touristy but still has a taste of genuine Mexico and there are good beaches up and down Banderas Bay. Mazatlan is a big, sprawling polluted city.

Nope but you can go to Guadalajara my home town
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guadalajara%2C_Jalisco
Guadalajara is known as the "the Mexican Silicon Valley,CA"
According to FDi magazine, Guadalajara is ranked "city of the future" over all other major Mexican cities, has the second strongest economic potential of any major North American city behind Chicago, and was among the top five most business-friendly Latin American cities in 2007

The tertiary activities of Guadalajara are based on tourism: the academic, entertainment, sport and cultural tourism. With an expectation for high growth within the next five years, tourism is now one of the most important sectors in the Guadalajaran economy. It is an important tourist destination center in itself and serves as an axis of an array of nearby tourist destinations (Puerto Vallarta, Manzanillo, Mazatlan).

Guadalajara is well connected by modern highways to Mexico City, to the Northwest and to the major beach resorts of Manzanillo, Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta. Guadalajara's airport is the third most active of the country (after Mexico City and CancĂşn) with direct flights to many Mexican and American cities. It also has a lively and distinctive network of car-free streets.

Guadalajara is also one of the world's favorite places for Americans and Canadians to retire due to it's calm and secure enviroments, most living in the Chapala lake's sorroundings.

First I would need to know what you are interested in seeing or visiting. If you want to go to the beach you can try the usual Can-Cun or you can try something different and go to Nayarit, its beautiful and now so crowded and you will not spend as much. Now if you want to get to know the Mexican culture you HAVE to go to Guanajuato, Puebla and Mexico City. They are beautiful cities, if you are worried abut safety you could skip Mexico City, or if you do decide to go watch where you go and don’t carry to much money, hide you cell and cameras, because if you look like the typical “gringo” (no offence) you will become an excellent target. If you are carful and don’t go to dangerous places you will be just fine.
Your last choice could be Monterrey for example, the third largest city in mexico (my hometown), it’s a really safe city to visit many good places to go. The only down side is that it is really close to the US border so we are very influenced by the American culture so you will find many similarities. If you do decide to come to Monterrey I could give you a tour :D I studied tourism so it would be a pleasure or you can contact me and I will give you a few pointers on where to eat, go and that kind of things.
Have fun and enjoy your trip!
