Mr. R

We are traveling to Cozumel at the start of April, is it safe?

We have heard so many things about things happening in Mexico, we were just wondering if anyone had heard or experienced anything in Cozumel specifically

The drug cartels are killing each other and police in the border towns--THOUSANDS OF MILES AWAY FROM Cozumel.
There have been ZERO tourists killed by narco-traffickers in the tourist zones.

Cancun and Cozumel is not the hub of the drug wars. Though some resorts like Acalpulco have experienced cartel killings, most of the problems are border towns. I would think you will be fine but I would be hesitant to go inland too far if you are planning mainland excursions. Nothing has been noted for either Cancun nor Cozumel at this time.

Went to Cozumel on my honeymoon July 2007.There's some parts away from the resort that are congested and poor. They drive like maniacs around there. We rented a jeep and drove around the island.Got lost when we got into the more populated surburban area, but made it back o.k.Only thing we experienced that was close to being negative was being bombarded by shop keepers in San Miguel."Hey Amigo,we got what you want right inside.Come take a look.",next store:"Hola amigo.Want a bracelet for your woman?Come on in.",etc.,etc.Other than that (I loved San miguel by the way.Very quaint.) Being in Cozumel changed my opinion about mexico being a dirt hole. The people we met were generally very nice people.Very helpful and I fell in love with the country. You'll have a great time.

I listen to Mexican news and have relatives in Mexico and I have not heard a peep about Cozumel. The drug cartels and danger you have heard about is concentrated more or less at the border because thats where the money is crossing so the island is not a concern and you should have no problem. So have fun!
