What's the best place to vacation in Mexico?

I'm a single guy planning a trip to Mexico and would like some ideas of where to go visit. I really don't like the beach so I don't want to go to Cancun or any of the other beach resorts. I kind of just want to go and learn about the culture and history of Mexico. Any good ideas?

It is good that you don't want to go to cancun. Many people want to go to Cancun or Puerto Vallarta to say they went to Mexico, but in truth those cities have become too Americanized. If you want to go to a truely Mexican city and still touristic, visit Guadalajara, Jalisco. It is well known for its culture, architecture, and most importantly the birth-place of the Mariachi. Just 30 minutes Northwest is where I'm from, Tequila, Jalisco. Yes, the birth place of Tequila (Headquarters of Tequila Sauza and Jose Cuervo). It's not a bunch of teenagers drinking, but people with respect and dignity. The offer tours of how Tequila is made and how free taste testing. Other places include Mexico City (Pyramids), but very dangerous at night and too much smog. Guanajuato has the mummies and el Cristo Rey. I would recommend Guadalajara.

Mexico City is the best option.
I've read other answers and they're right. Guanajuato and Queretaro are good places to learn about the movement of independence in Mexico. Oaxaca is a great state to know about culture before the spanish colonial invation; but Mexico City offers all of these and more. Visit the "Museo de Antropologia e Historia" and you'll get a great idea about all the different tribes and their traditions, as well of the Mexican History. Visit one or two "mercados" to get lunch or breakfast, get your eyes filled with all the different colors and shapes of the fruit satnds; ask in your hotel, they can tell you about some good ones you can enjoy. Go to "el Zocalo" and admire all the palaces built around the 17th century. Go to "Palacio de Bellas Artes" and get an idea of the French architecture influence in one of the most beautiful buildings in the country.
These places are just some of the things you can do, once you are there you'll see there's plenty more to do.

Sounds like Mexico City is right up your ally.

IMHO------the Copper Canyon-------it's beautiful and can be done cheaply. You take a train ride through the mountains and the canyon and even through tunnels. You can meet people on the train so you aren't lonely or if you don't want to meet anyone you don't have to. The train starts in Chihuahua city and you can go the the Museum of the Revolution, Pancho Villas mansion. The train stops in Los Mochis on the other side of the mountains.

I posted a link with details from Ojinaga, I haven't done that one but it's closer to the border so you don't have to start in Chihuahua city if you don't want to.

I plan on going again it a year or so...........it is beautiful.

I recommend Guadalajara or Oaxaca. Both are relatively easy to get to, very steeped in history and culture, yet also provide modern cosmopolitan amenities. I'm partial to Oaxaca for its Mayan attractions. It's still returning to normal after some recent unrest and protests, so it's offering some good deals on hotels and restaurants right now.

each state has its own history, culture and even different dialects. Oaxaca, Veracruz, Guadalajara, etc. they all their own culture, learn about them on the Internet and whatever looks good to you go and visit.

You should try central Mexico. Morelos is a beautiful state and the capital (Cuernavaca) is known as the "city of eternal spring" the weather is very pleasant (not too hot nor too cold) and there are many interesting places nearby. There is a silver mining town of Taxco which is located in Guerrero and is only 1 hour busride away. Morelos has many historic sites, such as the ruins of Xochicalco and the famous Palacio Cortés as well as Jardín Borda. Do some research, Morelos really is beautiful.

Guanajuato is nice.... very colonial and peaceful...If you get a chance go to San Miguel de Allende, Guanajuato a very lovely small town. In the Capital of Guanajuato you can visit the historical buildings and the museum where the mummies are. Have fun in Mexico.
