It depends on what you want to do and the time you will be staying in the country:

If you want to go to the beach you should go to Cancun. It has the most beautiful beaches I have ever seen. If you are going to Cancun I would recommend you to stay at the Presidente Intercontinental hotel. It has great service, the best beach in Cancun, great pools, very good restaurants, and there are several good places where you can go clubbing nearby.

If you can you should also go to the Riviera Maya. I have only been at some parts of it, and I can tell you that it is extremely beautiful. Some friends have done the whole trip to the Riviera Maya and have told me that is one of the most beautiful and interesting trips they have ever done.

If you want to go to museums and go shopping you should go to Mexico City. The historical parts of the city are beautiful. The places you can visit are the following:

The Centro (the main square of the city): It is where the governmental buildings of Mexico are located. The architecture of the buildings is beautiful because these are from the times of colonization.

Reforma Avenue: It is one of the most beautiful avenues in the world, it can be compared to the ones in Paris.

Anthroplogy Museum: Here you can learn something about the cultures that existed in México before the Spaniards came to colonize. It is quite interesting.

Coyoacan: It is a beautiful colony of the city.

Bellas artes Museum.

There is also a bus for tourists that takes you to the most beautiful parts of the city. I recommend it.

If you have enough time (two weeks or so) you can rent a car and drive from Mexico city to Cancun. I have done this trip and it is amazing. If you consider to do it you should probably do the following (it is what I did).

Rent a car in México city, and from there drive to Veracruz. In there you can stay two days or so. The city is very beautiful and the people is really nice. You should probably go to the Malecon, to the port, and to San Juan de Ulúa, to the acuarium, and also to a very famous café, it is called “café la parroquia”. (there are so many places to go that I can’t remember very well which ones I went).

Then you should continue driving to Villahermosa. Here you can go to Palenque (it is a Mayan city; you can see the pyramids and everything, very interesting, and also very hot if you go on summer). You should also go to the cascades of “Agua azul” (it is really beautiful although not so easy to get there (the road is in the middle of the mountain, a lot of curves, and a little dangerous, but don’t get scared, I survived).

Then you should continue driving to Uxmal (more pyramids). You should check the days and times on which the archeological zone is open. Very nice as well although you should stay only one day.

After that you continue driving to Merida. It is one of the most beautiful cities of México. The buildings are incredible; some houses even look like palaces. The people is very nice and there are lots of things to do there. The food is great also, there are very nice restaurants.

While you stay in Merida you can drive to “Celestun”. It is an ecological reserve, it is very very nice.

Then you can continue driving to Cancun, and maybe also visit the Riviera Maya.

The trip to return will take you about two days. I recommend you to drive first from Cancun to Villahermosa, spend the night there, and then drive to México city the next day.

It is one of the most fantastic travels I have ever made.

I would recommend the Riu Caribe hotel or the Omni Cancun, these are both located in the hotel zone of Cancun. You definitely want to purchase the all-inclusive because it lets you drink alcoholic, non-alcoholic, and all the food you can eat at the hotel for free. This usually costs about $75 to $120 more per person, but in the end you save soooo much $! I would recommend the snorkeling and definitely a visit to Senor Frogs. Try not to rent a car because the bus is so cheap and can take you everywhere, besides everyone drives crazy down there!

Go to cancun if you youl like being on a beach that is hotel, hotel, club, hotel. Riviera Maya is a 100% better. The closer you get to Tulum the better. Tulum having one of the most beautiful beach that I have ever seen. Rent a car and expoler all that the Riviera Maya has to offer.

Batmen

Depends on what you want to do. Party? Cancun. Greatest chance to have hurricane as it's on the Atlantic side. But btwn these 3 nicest beaches and water (turquoise)
Puerto--Beautiful in some parts. Nasty in others. Downtown has great clubs and venues to hangout in. Very hot just like the rest of Mexico. Stay on the La Mismaloya side if you're looking for the most beautiful part of Puerto.
Acapulco- Small, lots of clubs, lots of cliffs, beautiful but for everything, go to PV.

West Coast(Pacific water is not pretty like the Caribbean)
Acapulco has some very nice resorts but its a huge city, ugly and polluted. Cabo has some very nice resorts and good fishing,
PV is a great mix of real Mexico and resort as well
East Coast Beautiful Caribbean waters)
Cancun is a total 24/7 party place with access to the pyramids
Playa Del Carmen is very nice and quite 40 miles south of Cancun(ggogle Mayan Rivera for close by resorts) and a short ferry ride across form Cozumel.
Cozumel is fairly quite but has some night life and the best diving in Mexico.

I really recommend Oaxaca, Mexico. It is known for having the best food in Mexico and it is a fairly inexpensive place to go. You can visit old ruins, take cooking classes, visit the many nightclubs, or take the local tranportation to the Zocalo square that has nighttime entertainers and bars and greast restaurants.

Destination: Monte Albán
Archaeological Site, Valles Centrales
The massive temples of Monte Albán, on a small road 9 km (5½ mi) west of Oaxaca, make this one of the country's most spectacular archaeological sites. This vast city was home to more than 30,000 Zapotec. Despite its size, experts estimate that only about 10% of the site has been uncovered. Digs are sporadic, taking place whenever the budget permits. Direct buses serve Monte Albán from the Hotel Rivera del Ángel (Calle Mina 518), departing on the half hour from 8:30 to 3:30; the last bus back is at 6 PM. The round-trip fare is about $3; to stay longer than two hours you must pay a small surcharge (you can decide once you're on-site). COST: $3.50. OPEN: Daily 8-5.

During the day it seems as if everyone passes through Oaxaca's shady main plaza, with its wrought-iron benches and matching bandstand. At night mariachi and marimba bands play under colonial archways or in the bandstand. It's a historic and truly beloved spot: when McDonald's tried to open a branch on its east side in late 2002, grassroots opposition led by painter Francisco Toledo brought the project to a halt.

Casa de Luz Maria, Avenida Morelos 1002, telephone 951/516-2378, is a small bed and breakfast in a modern, private home. The location is superb, the rooms, though a bit run-down, open out to a grassy, sunny courtyard perfect for sunning or quiet reading. Plus, you get to have breakfast every morning with the hostess, Luz Maria Gonzalez, one of Oaxaca's most lively and fascinating citizens. Last time I checked, doubles cost $35, breakfast included; reserve in advance.

don't just stay at resort towns that is all tourists visit the real Mexico where the do not speak English, find out about their culture and you will have a great time
