Mexicans are of Hispanic decent from Spain and Portugal.
Due to the military presence of Spain's Conquistadors, the blood lines between the natives and the Spanish have mixed for the past 400 years.

Mexicans are ethnically diverse. It is true that American Indians ( called indigenous peoples in Mexico) are the largest contributors to the gene pool there are also strong caucasian influences and to a lesser, but notable degree African and east Asian.

The great majority of Mexicans are classified as "mestizo" meaning literally mixed. The modern definition of mestizo means any degree of mixture between European and American Indian. This group includes about 62% of the population.

The next largest group are the people who are of pure, or nearly pure, American Indian origin. They make up 31% of the population.

7% of the population is said to be pure, or nearly pure caucasion. The caucasians are of Spanish(mainly), French, German, Irish, British, Polish, Russian, and other European extractions as well as Jewish ( mainly Ashkenazy and some Shephardic) and Lebanese.

It is interesting to note that there are several families of Japanese and Chinese origin which have been in Mexico for a century or more. There is a small Chinatown in Mexico City.

Also there is a black population, concentrated in the gulf state of Veracruz and the pacific states of Guerrero and Oaxaca, of about one million.

Oddly the Asians and blacks are not taken into account in the national census as ethnic groups. The state of Oaxaca has recently begun to recognize the blacks as an ethnic group.

So one can meet Mexicans who are of African, native American, east Asian, arab, and European descent. They may be brown, black, yellow, white, with black, brown, blond or red hair and have any color of eyes seen anywhere else on the planet.

Well I for one am Spanish, French, American and Aztec or Mayan im still not sure which. But either way I am Mexican with those backgrounds.

Jenn N you sick racist. If they have their green cards then their legal so you cant call them wetbacks. No ones complaining when a bunch of stupid young kids from America go to Mexico to party and get drunk. At least most of the Mexicans here are here to work and make a decent living. And I dont see any americans or any other nationality rushing to learn the spanish language when they go to mexico. So quit with the stupid "they need to learn english" excuse. Obviously their not going to learn it quickly. I assume someone who just got to the U.S may want to find a job first because obviously you cant pay for english lesson if you dont have money and if you dont have money you probably dont have a job so my point is They have to start from square one. But at least most of them do it with integrity. I can admit that some hispanics are nothing but trouble but that doesnt speak for the whole. Anyways whatever I dont need to explain it to you your probably just some CRAZY HICK who wont ever get out of her racist box.

They are a huge Combination of Aztec Indians, Mayan Indians, & Europeans ( Mostly of French, and Spanish Decent)..

Wow Jenn, that's harsh. A person who is a legal resident of Mexico is a Mexican. They could possibly be dirty, if they worked in a field all day, but a shower can cure that. A person cannot be called a wet-back until or unless they illegally enter another country. You yourself would be a wet-back if you illegally entered Mexico, and then you would be in a whole world of trouble, unlike the reverse.

People born in Mexico are Mexicans. They would include some of the newcomers from Asia; China and South Korea who have children here. Please stop with thinly veiled anti Mexican rhetoric, complete history of Mesoamerica, if slightly flawed, on Wikipedia.

Early history of California would be helpful to serious questioners when we were all Californios...Mexicans, Gringos, French, Chinese, Russians etc.
