What are the best cities in Mexico to live for an American?

You can look most of that stuff on the net. Broadband is readily avaliable in the bigger cities. Its cheaper to live but not as much as you might think in the bigger cities like Mexico.

Best cities would be Guadalajara, Monterrey (both have large American communities) and Mexico City which has a large international community.

Smaller centers with large foreign and/or Ammerican communities would be San Miguel Allende, Ajijic, Chapala, Cuernavaca and Guanajuato.

probably anywhere, but you may be lonely. I think most of the mexicans are in los angeles.

hello, I'm from Acapulco and my husband is an American citizen and during my experience i know that alot of American people like to go for long vacations to Acapulco because has beautiful beaches and incredible view from the bay of Santa Lucia, we own a condo on the costera that is the main street is a tourist area you have close wal.mart ,restaurants,the beach is just 1 block from the condo, has pool and and incredible view from the big terrace that is in the top of the building . that condo is huge 4 bedrooms, 5 bathrooms, big kitchen, bid dinning room and living room, 2 terraces, and is just 1 condo per floor we are trying to sale or rent. the rent per month will be 1500 usd wich is a very good deal for the location and has phone line, and security 24 hours in the lobby.
maybe is expensive for you , but i can help you to find other condos for rent more accessible, the cost of live in Acapulco is depend what do you want to do or live . for me is not very expensive

I would recommend 2, the first is a city named San Miguel DE Allende it's in the central state of Guanajuato, the weather is great all year round, it's a colonial and historical city, the local economy is very good, the people are friendly, and you have all the comforts you need in fact the city is well known for having a large population of Americans, one of them is NBA star John Stockton.
My other choice is the capital city of the state of Guanajuato, with the same name(Guanajuato), again , the good weather, nice people , good economy, low crime rate, and a VERY large college student community, so there's many clubs, bars and festivals, and again you have all the comforts, I live very close to both.

I live in Mazatlan and love it. It's a great beach town, friendly people, cost of living is cheap, fresh seafood and produce year round, excellent hospital. It's a city, 1/2 million people, so you get all the conveniences you would want; DSL, etc. Food is very inexpensive, as most of it is local. It is actually easier finding a furnished apartment, but unfurnished do exist. I am not sure how nice a pad you want or what part of town that you are looking to live in, but around 200 - 300 a month should get you a nice place. Only requirement you would need to rent is money!

Get either the 2003 or 2004 AAA book, I can't remember what month (mid-year May, June or July). There was an article on a number of ex-patriate American communities in Mexico.

Xalapa (Jalapa) in the State of Veracruz...45 min by car from the Port of Veracruz and many other beaches, even though it's a very nice and cultural city, lots of flowers and plants, moderate weather, it's not hot...
...internet, clubs, movie theaters, lots of "cafes", lots of cultural events, all kind of classes about art, literature, dance, photography, sports, languages, etc..
close to many nice towns, where u could do rafting or hiking...near to waterfalls, rivers, near to the coffee region of Veracruz...many foreigners live here...
5 hrs by bus from Mexico City....

it's a nice place to live, kind of quiet...enjoyable!

I have spent Lot's time in Mexico and stayed for months in Oaxaca. Sure Oaxaca has prob.. now due to the teachers strike, it should blow over. For the most part climent is good and you can get most anything you need. I e-mail a friend twice a week he uses public service may cost one dollar hr. the computer. You can live good thousand per month. The food is good Lot's US citizens to talk to at the zocalo each day. US news for sale at news stand. Six hrs. from the beach buy bus the entire Oaxacan coast to choose from. The city Oaxaca ist so large you feel lost, that is just one of the good places, you cant go wrong with Oaxaca.

Forget border cities, try medium cities as Queretaro, Puebla, Aguascalientes ot all depends on you interests....

Pros:
Very USA friendly
DSL available everywhere
Many bilingual schools -for kids- and language schools -for foreigners-
Close to the Texan border -about two hours away from it-.
Population is about 4 million
Mountains sorround the city providing fantastic views and mountain like getaways within minutes.
Safer than Mexico city and Tijuana, especially for foreigners, in what concerns to robberies and kidnappings.
No strikes, no manifestations.
There are many jobs for foreigners -mainly as ESL teachers-.
Will be the host city of the International Culture and Technology Forum in 2007

Cons:
About 37 mob related executions -though it only happened to people inside or related to the gangster world-.
Very hot in summers and cold in winters -but I see it as a pro because where else on earth can you wear great summer and winter wear-. No snow on winters I'm afraid.
Traffic jams -usually in downtown.
Rents are higher than in other places. My friend lives in a three bedroom house in a nice area and pays about 500 dlls a month and that's the average rate. They can go as low as 100 dlls to as high a 2500 dlls or more.
Beach is far... at least five hours away.
