What are the reasons behind the escalating drug war in the border towns of Mexico?

Looks like elements and factions of what were the Colombian narcotraffickers and their gangs who fled to Mexico caused this new war, and the global recession means that those gangs are meaner, more violent, and more likely to cause injury or death, and will have such a high hair-trigger attitude that they will shoot anyone who makes the slightest resistance.

If drugs weren't illegal and if we had a more cohesive immigration policy, you would have virtually no need for narco wars on the border. If you remove the profit motive from the illicit trade, the gun violence will all but disapear.

I don't see anybody getting gunned down for transporting wine or beer; yet during prohibition that is all that you got; tommy gun warfare over the distribution of bathtub gin.

Drugs are bad, unfortunately, drug laws are worse.

1. Americans love drugs.
2. Americans love exporting automatic weapons to Mexico, for large sums of money and without pesky permits.
3. America will never decriminalize drugs, even though a certain segment of the population will always do them, and even though every form of prohibition allows for a powerful new underworld to spring up.
4. Lots and lots of people are getting very, very rich.

Hope this helps!

There is the Juarez cartel in the state of Chihuahua.
There is the Tijuana cartel in the state of Baja California.
There is the Sinaloa cartel in the state of Sinaloa.
There is the Gulf Cartel cartel in the state of Tamaulipas.
There is the Sonora cartel in the state of Sonora.
Los Zetas are involved in myriad criminal activities. They have branched out into kidnappings, murder-for-hire, extortion, money-laundering and human smuggling. For security purposes, Los Zetas have adopted a cell-like structure to limit the information that any one member of the organization knows about his associates.

Supplying drugs to the United States is a 400 billion dollar business. And each cartel want to supply the biggest share of the drugs and make the most money. So they try to kill each other to control the drug corridors.
If everybody in America stopped using drugs today, the cartels would go out of business tomorrow and the killing would stop.

First reason is pure marketing, but in this illegal trade free competition is not an option, cartels are fighting each other then.

See by puting the heads of the cartels on jail or sending them to the the USA a gap of power is created , so the next in line maybe more than two guys want to take the position of the old boss, and division starts.

The second reason is corruption,Drug cartels in mexico pay great amounts of money to officers to serve as their ears and eyes and who ever don´t want to get in line with the cartels end up dead.

The third reason is political, for a long time in mexico no president wanted to confront the cartels, since they knew that could start heavy violence.

President Calderon is not an idiot he simply had to do that since the problem was a bubble ready to explode, and taking action was the only way.

The fourth reason has to do with the USA, it is the largest consumer of drugs in the world, most of the fighting has to do with crossing the drugs to the USA, the bad attitude towards the problem from american authorities by saying that is a Mexican problem, while over here in Mexico there is a lot of murders and also every day a drug shipments with large amounts of drugs are being caught by Mexican authorities, in the USA tons and tons of drugs pass smoothly and no problem in the USA is created, El Paso brags about being one of the safest towns in the USA but a lot of the drugs cross around its territory.

Weapons are sold in the USA to drug dealers like candy, here the army had confiscated weapons use by the USA Army that are not sold to the public like granades and granade launchers. How we know this weapons come from some source in the USA army and not Mexico? because the granades in mexico are made in mexico and they are different from the ones in the USA.

The fifth is the arrogant attitude from officials in the usa, blaming mexico for everything, is easy to blame the little guy.

Just one comment in the 1800 Mexico and the USA had a common problem ..Apaches, it was until both countries collaborated and fight the war together when the problem came to a stop. in Fact the legendary Geronimo surrender in Mexico.

before that the two coutries blame each other for the issue, and the apaches took a big advantage of that.

the same is happening right now.

It is all about the Power and Money. The Mexican government is more corrupt than ours.

Your right, this is getting scary huh. Its a shame that some countries rely on drug crops for income in their countries. Research whose cash crop is poppies in the Middle east.
If someone cant hand them a new cash crop, they will all continue what brings food to the table.

Supply and demand, corruption and arms. Greed (love of money). We cannot excuse ourselves as we foot the demand and the automatic arms. It is true that Mexico is the most corrupt place on Earth. Their president is an idiot. They have no education regulations and they embarrass themselves by allowing their uneducated citizens to immigrate to other parts of the world (thus people believe that they are all ignorant). It's all true. But we must take responsibility for buying their drugs and providing them with automatic weapons. Thus our stupidity is showing in this equation as well.

The only thing Colombia adds is the cartel model. The difference being that Colombians are highly educated, they do not use drugs (just making some cash) and their cartels are on the way out.

S_Colton
The Mexican government is weak and the drug cartels are taking advantage of it. Also, they cartels are better armed than the Mexican Army, who are easily bribed.
