Best bet is to take some US dollars to start with, if you try to get mexican pesos eg in Europe you will get ripped off by the bank.
There are plenty of ATMs in Mexico where you can use your Visa card or even Maestro. Dollars are accepted in most hotels and restaurants in Cancún but why would you pay in dollars if you are in Mexico?
Besides if you are paying in dollars at these places you are paying more proportionately than in pesos.
If you take you credit card/maestro then you don't need to worry about having exchanged too much money.
Wish you enjoy your holiday. Another tip, Don't stay too long in Cancún and visit some of the beautiful archeological sites or do some scuba diving. |

Cancún is truly bi-cultural. The official currency is the Mexican peso, but you will find that major credit cards and US dollars are accepted most anywhere. |

We always take some American currency and some Peso that we transfer here ( we have found it is cheaper to convert here than over there) Some places there will accept American currency wehave found but not many. If we need more Pesos over there...then we have typically converted at the resort which we stay at. Remember also, if you use credit cards over there check with your bank beforehand or whoever the card is issued through. When you get your statements it will be in that currency ( or ours always have been ) so you will want to check your statements carefully. |

Mexican pesos will be the best. But you can do well with American dollars. Just watch out with the exchange rate. If you pay in dollars they will give change in pesos and is kind of confusing. |
