You don't have to have a passport yet...
The Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004 requires that by January 1, 2008, travelers to and from the Caribbean, Bermuda, Panama, Mexico and Canada have a passport or other secure, accepted document to enter or re-enter the United States. |

a car and your id. You can get Mexican insurance if you want it. Just look up Mexican car insurance and buy it online, it is pretty cheap and you can get it for the days you need it. |

If you are renting a car, and I suggest you do, there are few that will rent for travel into Mexico. When you find one, get a Mexican insurance policy from them directly, it is your best rate for one and required in south of the border. If they catch you without it’s a fine and maybe a day or two in jail, and you would rather die!
As for your documents, a passport is best, but a picture ID like a US operators license as well as a certified and stamped copy of a birth certificate. Nice to have a social security card as well.
Easy to cross border entering into Mexico, but expect long long long long delays on the trip back. If you take the main road through Tijuana, expect delays of four hours or more.
If you get your insurance on line, they will hold you until it is verified! |

INSURANCE...specifically Mexican Insurance. You can get it at AAA or at the border. Birthcertificate, or better yet a passport, with the homeland security stuff. If you are going deep into mexico, I also think you need some kind of permit to bring your car...you get it at the check points 50 or so miles into Mexico. |
