Watch the white line, crazy drivers, pay the tolls, get insurance, have your car papers in your name and bring a credit card

At least gas is about $2.70 a gallon

You can drive your own vehicle into Mexico. you just need these things:

1. temporary vehicle permit: http://www.banjercito.com.mx

2. Mexican auto insurance: http://www.mexadventure.com

3. Mexican tourist card (at the border or Mexican consulate in your city) : http://studenttravel.about.com/od/mexicostudenttravel/f/mexico_visa.htm

What Charlie said, but if you want to can get the permit in advance online at:

http://www.banjercito.com.mx/site/imagenes/iitv/instruccionesIITV_ing.html

It costs a little more but they deliver it to your door (assuming that you have the 10-14 days to wait for the delivery)

You will need to purchase Mexican car ins. before you go. There are many places, but the 1st site below gives my favorite. Then , you also need a Mexican car permit...you can get this at the nearest Mexican consulate to where you live before you leave, or at the border...they will direct you to the office. See 2nd site for info. You will also need a 180 day tourist card, which you will get at the border.
