Hola!
I think Mexico is a great country. It has a lot of history, culture, and art. Also, the country has many natural resources. It is an industrialized country which ranks about 13th in the world's economies. It's also a huge agricultural producer and it's one of the top tourist destinations in the world. It is an emerging democracy. It's integrated with the USA and Canada though NAFTA.
The people are warm and friendly. The food is GREAT! And life moves to a different beat, a different tempo. Hard to put my finger on it... But life is different from the US in Mexico. Maybe because it's more "raw" but things feel more real in Mexico and the US just seems so fake nowadays. The US economic collapse has left Americans without anything to hold on to as they worship materialism and materiel wealth. In Mexico most people still put family and friends before things and work.
Of course there is a downside. Mexico has very high poverty and high unemployment. The government is too often corrupt and the people are complacent in that corruption as they are a part of it. Public education suffers. All too often Mexican business is restricted by nepotism and cronyism. Violent crime is on the rise and there's a drug war being fought daily. Still, most violent crime is directed at those involved in drug crime and the police, not everyday people. Criminals even after robbing someone at gun or knife point rarely injure or kill the victim, as long as they didn't resist. A far cry from the US where many criminals kill for "fun". The murder rate in the US and Mexico is almost the same. So, the reality is that Mexico is just as safe as the US. In fact, many parts of Mexico are much safer than similar areas in the US.
Racism exists in Mexico just like everywhere. All you have to do is turn on a Mexican telenovela (Soap Opera) or read a Mexican fashion magazine or look at Mexican billboards. Almost all of the models and actors are white Mexicans. Many with blond hair and blue or green eyes. This in a country where only 10% of the population is considered to be "white" (Spanish ancestry). 60% are mixed (mestizos) and about 30% are indian. Mexico also discriminates against foreigners in it's hiring practices and even foreign born naturalized Mexican citizens can never serve in the military, police or in the government. Migrants from Central America are routinely beaten, robbed, raped (the women that is) and even murdered by Mexican police, soldiers, and immigration officials, while at the same time Mexico DEMANDS better treatment of it's citizens illegally in the US.
Anyways, Mexico has a lot going for it. Corruption needs to be controled and jobs created in the formal economy. A US guest worker visa program would help many migrant workers and their families. The drug cartels need to be broken and their criminal members in prison.
Maybe Carlos Slim could give a billion or so to help Mexico create jobs and fight corruption. He is the world's richest man after all.

Mexico rules!!!! My wife and I went on our Honeymoon to Ixtapa. It was great. The weather was awesome, the people were friendly, and the hotel was fabulous. Basically, it is a nice tropical paradise like Hawaii, but the price is at least 1/3 off maybe a ½ off. You get an excellent value for your money.
A year or two later, we went Salavador, Brasil for five days. My wife and I kept telling each that Mexico is way nicer. I like the food and the culture. Eventually, I would like to see Puerto Vallarta, Acapulco, and the Silver cities.

I like it there. But I've only been to Mazatlan, Cabo (twice), and Puerto Vallarta (twice.) Oh and Cozumel one or two times. I REALLY would like to go to Mexico City sometime. And Acapulco! But more Mexico City so I could practice my Spanish more. |

hi, I am British.
I just got back from ACA two days ago it is my third visit to Mexico.
I've always been happy there but I got busted for speeding this time which is my own fault haha.
I always find the mexican people nice and polite I never had a bad experience with them apart from the city police :o)
Ignore people who say to you that they don't go to mexico because you will get shot every day, these people probably never even went to your country...
I will go again next year maybe
I hear that Mexicana will start a direct flight from London to Monterrey is this true? |

I used to absolutely love it, my aunt's husband has family there so they have a house there and I've been there a few times. Everybody is so nice and the scenery was beautiful where they lived...but I think it's a very scary place to go right now, and I will not be going back any time soon.
One lady my dad works with drove to mexico with her husband and 13 year old daughter to visit her husband's mother...on the way there they were pulled over and kidnapped and held for ransom...they had to get family to drive down to mexico and pay up..they paid about $1200. They say it was the mexican police that did it, for drug money. This was like...two weeks ago too. |

Until the drug cartel wars are under control, I wouldn't go anywhere near Mexico, especially driving. There have been too many incidents of people being shot, decapitated or kidnapped. They are even killing cops! |
