What do you call the Mexican comforter/blanket?

My boyfriend has a comforter from Mexico. It is not the colorful striped blankets that I know you are thinking about. It is VERY heavy, large and is commonly used in Mexico as the "comforter" I want to say its "coverter" in Spanish, but I am unsure. I also see people in the airports with them in plastic bags...I think they are common in Mexico and Middle Eastern countries...what are they called?
Additional Details
It is NOT a serape. It is a HUGE THICK comfortor type blanket that you put on your bed...like equivalent to our comforters here in the US.

Things have different names in different parts of Mexico. I live in the mountains of Veracruz...and it is freezing here today! Those really thick, usually plaid, bright , fuzzy blankets are called "cobertores." Pronounced like...
co- bear- tor-ase with the accent on the "tor." A comforter with regular fabric (cotton) , is called an "edredon."

Yes, its not a sarape, its a cobija, colcha o cobertor ppl usually use in the towns of mexico, not really in the cities. My grandmom lives in a little town and all their beds have cobijas like that over the sheets and under another blanket, they are really good for the winter.

es una cobija

DRocK
'Cobija' or 'Colcha.' Cobija basically just refers to a think blanket you use in Winter whereas a Colcha is also usually thick too, but for the most part is used as the decorative bed cover that goes on top of the bedspread.

'Coverter' is just downright ghetto Spanish.

Nii
Its called a Sarape.

You mean SARAPE?

Not a comforter, if it is...it's a woven blanket, probably made of wool or an acrylic that looks like wool. Rainbow bright colors and a fringe? That's a sarape.

The big soft heavy kind or the rough wool kind? The rough wool ones are Sarape. The others I dunno what Mexicans in mexico call them but her in Texas the Mexicans call them blankets. And you can buy them at any flea market. No need to cross over and endanger yourself. Mexico is mega deadly.
