What do you think about Mexico passing laws to allow abortions?

it should be a law that all women there have to be fixed by the time there like....ummmm 14

They are just slowly catching up with the societies that realized that archaic misogynist laws are a detriment to society and that women should have a right to choose....Lets face it--go to a Walmart and ask yourself how many people there REALLY should be parents?!?!?

It is a positive step toward reducing the horrific practice of clandestinian abortions in this nation. However, the solution could have been to attack the problem from its roots: educate women! As far as I know, many, if not all, public schools in Mexico do not have a sex-ed program. What would be the point in legalizing abortion if these women are not educated?
Hope that makes sense

I think Mexico City's decision to legalize abortions is a step towards allowing parents making their own decisions. Women do have choices and especially when it comes to having or not having kids. And one of them is abortion. Abortion should be legalized and that mothers or parents must have the choice for not having children. It is definitely cruel to kill your child, but in countries of Asia like India, China and Middle East, where abortion is becoming more common with respect to overpopulation.

It could be possible that Mexico may have passed this decision to curb its population like India, Brazil and China. But, its Mexico! Mexico could be criticized for such decisions by international human rights organizations like Amnesty international. I overall think its right for a country to act in its best interest.

I was listening to a phone-in this morning on the radio on the way to work (I live in Mexico). It seemed the majority said it should be made legal but with limits ie if the baby was not ''normal'' or a result of rape.
One person said that as Mexicans are so irrisponsible generally (ie lack of sex education at home), it would not help anyone making it legal in general. Seems there is a very mixed opinion.

well, i believe they have long since had abortions for rape, severe deformation, and risk of the mother's life. most hispanic countries have. (ps...el salvador doesn't allow it at all!!! even if the mother may die! yikes!!)

most of my mexican friend's are totally repulsed by the idea of legal abortion. they keep saying now mexico will be as "morally corupt" is the US. which is sort of an odd statement if you ask me....i guess it's all in what you focus on.

personally, i think not much about it. now their laws are like the US laws. it's basically the same. i don't agree with abortion though, but that's my personal opinion. everyone is free to make their own choice. i just hope they choose not to have one.

I agree that sexual education needs to be taught, perferably by parents, so that families aren't strained so much by the pressure of having so many kids to feed. There has been a decrease in the amount of kids many Mexican families are now having, which means something is being done to help women and men realize how to obstain from having more children. I agree that abortions should be legal for women that are raped or similar incidents. Overall, the population growth is the bottom line, and mexico knows something is needing to be done to help families from having too many children-that something doesn't necesarily mean abortion, they are encouraging people to have less children before abortion even comes into the picture. Case in point, my husband is from Mexico and comes from a family of 9 kids including himself. All of his siblings that have kids have no more than 2, 2 have 2 kids and 4 have 1. One of my sister-in-laws has one son who is 10 and she isn't planning on having anymore. People there are trying to keep control of how many kids they are having and that is good.

As a response to some of the posters, please keep in mind that Mexico is a very Roman Catholic country. Birth Control is forbidden in the Catholic Church the fact that abortion has become legalized is almost mind boggling.
There are more westernized countries which still do not allow abortion, Ireland comes to mind. I understand that abortion discussion is a volatile subject even in the most clinical of settings. The fact that Mexico would even entertain the notion of legalized abortion is a step towards a more level footing for Mexican women. Regardless of one's opinion of abortion please remember that all the choices that a pregnant woman makes have consequences.

Well its always been happening its just that it was not legal...There have been several woman who have died due to unethical abortions...Its something that will be done with or without permission anyway..i think its better legal now the woman can go and not think about if they will come out alive cause I am sure the Doctor's doing this will have to pass some kind of permission...

I agree with Pingla. It will end a long history of abortions. Women would be able to get the appropriate care. However, education should come first. Also, I still believe that making abortions legal will just give irresponsible women the option to continue to be promiscuos. This is a very complicated subject almost like euthanasia. Each case should be looked at individually and patients should receive some sort of psychological therapy before taking the final decision.
