What exactly is safe to eat and drink in Cancun?

I am going to Cancun in a few weeks and I was wondering what is safe to eat and drink? I know to drink only bottled water but do we have to be extremely careful at the well-known restaurants? What about ice and salsa? I don't want to miss out on the salsa but I will definitely resist if it will make us sick? Any other inside tips on eating/drinking in Cancun??

you shouldn't get sick eating and drinking there unless you eat something that is off ....Cancun's water is safe to drink, I still keep to bottled but that's my preference. Ice and salsa etc is not an issue either, salsa's are made by scratch at most restaurants and is very safe. Inside tips .....don't worry Cancun is very safe!

It's all good in Cancun. Don't worry be happy.
Tips:
I do drink only bottled water when I travel even in the states. I'm always careful what I eat off the buffet table. If I can I'll order off the menu. Only because hot food should be kept hot and cold food should be kept cold.( My own code of how I eat) I always travel with my Imodium, just in case of a tummy upset. Not because the food is bad but because the food is different from what I eat at home.

That's it. Have a good fun vacation.

Anything you eat at the restaurant is typically okay. Stick with chilled canned drinks minus ice if at all necessary. Take some Pepto or Imodium JUST in case.

We went last August and the only place that we got sick at was Hooters, go figure! We tried all the local places that looked clean and we never got sick from there. We went to a great Argentinian steak house accross from Rain Forest, that was amazing. Also in the town center there are small restaurants that are adorable and not chains, like mentioned before that were delicious.
Def. do not order water, get jouice or soda, or just buy some water from Wal Mart (Cheap stuff there) and bring it with you where ever you go.
Also ask the concierge at the hotel for recommendations.

yes really, there is no need to worry. everyone drinks bottled water...they will NOT serve you bad water! i don't know why people think this...mexicans don't want to get sick either! and they don't want tourist to be afraid to come...they will do the best they can to keep you healthy!

my best advice...eat where others are eating. if it's popular, it's for a reason. also, just because your system has not adjusted...don't eat from street vendors, and avoid leafy vegitables because they are difficult to clean properly. if you had been living there for months, these foods would be ok...but not for a vacation.

nerves for than anything will upset your stomach. just bring pepto. or you can try a mexican drug called "buscapina" if you are at the pharmacia.

oh yeah the salsa.....if you see that every table has salsa already on the tables before people sit down...don't eat it. this is rare and you shouldn't see it in a tourist town...but even mexicans avoid this type of service. food out in the open for too long is not so good.

You should be fine - most people who get sick, get sick because they over do things. Too much sun, too much booze, seven different kinds of fruit from the breakfast buffet etc.

drink in bottles. I've went there and people told me not to drink it. So If I were you. Don't drink it.

I just got back from cancun last week,
You CAN use the ice and i ate salsa everyday! its safe!!
Just remember to never drink the water only the bottled ones!
You can brush your teeth with the water but just dont consume alot of it!

Definitely bottled water at all times and watch when brushing your teeth. No ice. Do not eat fruits or vegetables that are not peeled or cooked. Take medicine for diahrrhea in case you get the runs. But drink lots of bottled water to flush your system and to prevent dehydration. Do not eat from street vendors. Stick to good restaurants. Salsa could have unpeeled fruits and veggies. I got sick from that.
