What happens to Americans if they are caught working illegally in Mexico? |
We are all familiar with the penalties imposed on Mexicans who are caught working without proper documentation in the United States - sometimes jail and deportation. Is the punishment for working illegally in Mexico more lenient or draconian? It might be interesting to compare how each country deals with this issue. |

There's a difference between being in Mexico illegally and working in Mexico illegally. If you have a current visa you're less likely to get in real trouble. If you have no visa you'd likely get deported.
It could also depend on the visibility of the work, who you know in the community, are you in direct competition with other businesses and the local law enforcement. Very little is standard in Mexico. |

If you are American you don't have to worry, if you are from Guatemala or somewhere south don't even attempt it, you'll do jail time and be sent back to your country. but if you are American, and you get caught working illegally be sure you'll have your 15 min of fame in local news they will expose you over and over and even interview you for us all to know why having better opportunities there you come here to waste your time (it has happened) |

i doubt americans would want to work in mexico since they have extremely low wages. |

i don't know much about it but i know they are much less tolerant of illegals in their country and treat them rather harshly |

I´n most cases they don´t even notice....i know Americans working in here (Mexico) Illegally. I know about a case of some lawyer that only came for a case against a catholic priest and were invited to leave the country. |

The Mexican government actively seeks out Guatelmalans and El Salvadorans there (working) illegally. They are not kind to them.
Americans are not likely to go there to work due to the extremely low wage. |

Nothing in Mexico is a "black and white" answer. It will depend greatly on the circumstances. If it is a high profile job, you could be even deported. If you know people in power locally and/or if the job is pretty low profile, most likely nothing will happen to you. If you are otherwise legally in the country, they will just make you agree to not continue working and/or perhaps voluntarily leave the country. |

They are worse than us. I can't find the site I saw a while back that had their laws on illegal immigrants coming from their south, but it was much worse than our laws. |
