You have to review your policy and coverage. Many companies will cover you only for emergencies in short international trips.
Most likely you will have to either get a new plan from a US firm or get some kind of "International" insurance company that offer special packages for ex-pats or people moving to different countries. I have attached one sample.
There are also local Insurance companies that offer you good coverage. But often these companies will cover the services provided within the country (i.e. Mexico) but will not give you the option to fly somewhere else for special treatment. |

Almost all insurance companies will not cover you in Mexico. Call and check.
As an alternative, you can purchase insurance in Mexico for about $250 per year. |

most insurance companies will NOT cover you while living in another country...but they may/may not cover you for vacations. you need to check. mexico does have very good, qualified doctors for those who want to pay. the fee to see a doctor is probably what your copay in the US is normally. a blood test runs about 50 USD, office visit is about 40...although if you repeatedly go for the same problem, follow up visits are usually free. now, if you need surgery....that would be expensive. it's certainly a risk. i would call your insurance company and find out. |

Some hospitals, like the Sharp Hospital here in Mazatlan, are american based and will accept it. Those are rare, though. Mexican insurance is very inexpensive though, compared to the US, as is healthcare costs in general. I just had an appendectomy here last fall, not only was the care way above any that I have ever had previously in the US, my total bill; ER, labwork, surgery, doctors fees, private room for 3 days, meds, followup, etc., was less than $3500 USD. Also, our family doctor does house calls for $30 USD. Gotta love that! |

YOU WOULD NEED TO CHECK WITH YOUR INSURANCE,SOME INSURANCES HAVE AWAY FROM HOME BENEFITS. BUT KEEP IN MIND THAT YOUR INSURANCE MAY NOT BE THE PROBLEM THE PROBLEM MAY BE WITH THE DOCTOR YOU WILL BE SEING IN MEXICO MANY WANT PAYMENT FOR SERVICES UP FRONT. I WORK FOR A HOSPITAL AND WE REQUIRE ALL OF OUR OUT OF COUNTRY PATIENTS TO PAY UP FRONT IN FULL AND THEN THEY CAN SUBMIT THE RECEIPT FOR PAYMENTS TO WHATEVER TYPE OF INSURANCE THAT THEY HAVE IN THERE COUNTRY. |

In most cases your health insurance is not good in Mexico, BUT check before you leave call the insurance company. I did talk to one person with Kaiser who returned with medical recites and they paid them. You can purchase Mexican medical insurance, which most folks say is very cheap Doctors visits are around 40 dollars. Also Delta Dental now recognizes some Mexican dentist on their plans.
