While a passport isn't necessary to enter Mexico, it helps since it is usually the expected form of ID.

Passports will soon be needed to re-enter the US.

I need a passport in a week and it was ready for me in one day. It has to be done at a regular US passport office, not one at a post office. It was, of course, more costly.

A passport is an internationally recognized travel document that verifies the identity and nationality of the bearer. A valid U.S. passport is required to enter and leave most foreign countries.

This site has a lot of info about getting the passport in the mail.

You need to contact the Mexican Embassy in your own country and explain your problem to them.

even if you're a U.S citizen you need one. Trust me. I just came back and my cousin didn't have one and they gave her a hard time. By the end of this year anyone entering mexico or the U.S needs one.....

You can expide the process, it costs a bit more but it can be done but I have been to mexico numerous times and never needed a passport. Its good to have but I wouldnt worry about it. Take a drivers licence / ID and birth certificate if you have it.

You wouldn't be able to even get on the plane (international flight) without a passport.
