In order of absolute dollars,

(1) Mexico's most important natural resource is petroleum. Last year in 2008 Mexico's national oil company Pemex gave half of its $102 billion in earnings to the government in the form of tax payments. Mexico's oil and gas industry represents two fifths of the national budget. The industry is the nation's second largest supplier of income behind manufactured goods (clothing, cars, finished goods). Other natural resources besides oil and gas, in declining order, are silver, fruits, vegetables, coffee and cotton.

(2) Mexico's second highest cash resource is foreign remittances where workers send back cash payments to families or companies in Mexico. Last year in 2008, Mexican nationals sent back $25 billion to their home country.

(3) Tourism is Mexico's 3rd largest cash resource at $1.14B. Fifty eight percent of Mexico's workers are employed in the services industry.

Tourism is generally first, followed by petroleum and then money sent into the country from citizens working in other countries.
