A pretty typical Mexican town. Read the wikipedia entry and watch the video below.

marci knows best
That is a lovely area near the mountains of Michoacan. Right now we are in the dry season so everything is pretty dry but by June everything will be beautiful and green again. The main industry there is textiles. Pretty much just a real non-touristy Mexican mid-sized town. Should be a good place to see the real Mexico.

I must say not very beautiful, there are places so much nicer to go to. The place is not touristic, it is more of a work centre. La piedad has a lot of industry and mainly pig farms and this kind of stuff.
The place is not dangerous, no drug cartels or anything like that.
You might want to visit other things from there, like the gorgeous city of Querétaro, Morelia, Patzcuaro, Tzintzuntzan, etc. Good luck!

It's a small town near Morelia, where I lived, loved it by the way. They make this food called "carnitas" don't leave without tasting them.
