What is a good way to communicate with people in Mexico if I don't speak spanish?

A translator might be a good way to go, but chances are you'll find some people where you're going that speak english. Also, hand gestures and knowing some words in spanish can go a long way. It is good for instance to memorize words like where, emergency, please, help, beer, hotel, taxi, etc and you'll see that you can EASILY memorize about 100 words on an airplane if you buy one of those little spanish to english dictionaries, and that should be of great help. Hand gestures and drawings are good, but it may be a little out there, I would suggest being open minded and think about learning some words and also learn to spot people that can speak english. There might be something common to most people that speak english, it might be that you noticed that some people who have a baseball cap of an MLB team or NFL team speak more english, or that lighter skinned people speak more english, or that store owners speak more english, and this should help you some. Also if you say "English?" or "Do you speak English?" most people will know that you're looking for someone who speaks english. Hope this helps, if it does, I'd appreciate the ten points, thanks!

Just speak English.

I'm not being a smart a**

Most people you bump into in Mexico will know English fairly well, because you are either staying at their hotel, eating at their restaurant, or getting a ride in their cab.

Don't worry about it.

A smile, hand gestures, drawings... but try to learn a few basic Spanish words before you go. If you're going to a major tourist destination, you will find that many, if not most, people speak enough English to communicate.

However, speaking English louder won't help at all, if they don't understand it. If they understand some English, speak more slowly, in a normal tone of voice.
