What is mexico like? |
Im going down to mexico soon...and i dont know what to expect. Im driving down there with a buddy, and we just want to visit, and hang out. Im just bringing $50. I dont know if i should bring more money, or less. Is it safe down there for a half white guy/half beaner to go down there without getting robbed? Should i expect cheap streets or scenic views?
Basically, im going down there to eat some food, drive by places, and shop around. Im looking for a city that wont rip me off with high prices, and has good deals on stuff. |

Yeah, the border towns can be a bit rough. If you're just going down for a day you won't get deep enough into the country to see much good stuff. If you know your way around you can certainly get some good eats and maybe some cheap prices. (But just check out how many day visitors FROM MEXICO are shopping at the Wal-Marts along the border in the US, often the better prices are in the US!)
$50 won't go very far in Mexico these days, not along the border anyway, but it might just get you through the day. Just BE CAREFUL and don't do anything stupid! (getting blind drunk on "aguardiente" then accepting an invitation from a total stranger to see a cockfight at a local cat house 20 miles out in the desert at midnight, is pretty much a one-way "suicide run" in ANY country.....)
If you take a long weekend, drive about a day into the country and find a nice colonial town, you WILL find much cheaper prices on good hotels, its much safer, good local food, friendlier people, great arts and crafts and other local products at great prices, in fact a totally different world than the border!
Where you should go depends on where you live and/or start from. And whether you speak Spanish will be more important that if you are a "half white guy/half beaner". Mexicans are WAY less obsessed with a person's "race" than you Gringos are......
(Oh and all the BS stories about the "corrupt cops." 90% of tourists who constantly whine about having to pay the "mordida" (bribe) to the police are usually stopped while driving drunk, half naked, with open booze in the car, no proper papers, speak not a word of Spanish and have just run over two chickens and the Mayor's cousin's burro! I have been visiting Mexico for 25 years and have lived down here for 15. I have literally driven tens of thousands of miles in the country, from Nogales to Puerto Vallarta and Tlaquepaque to Oaxaca, from Chihuahua to Veracruz, Tecolutla, Acapulco and Ixtapa. In ALL those years I have paid money to the police on the highway, only THREE TIMES! Twice was for driving without a seatbelt (total $10) and the other was a "gift" for stopping to help me fix a flat tire ($5)! |

well don't go to any boarder towns and you wont have than many problems. Be street smart, imagine you are in down town LA. Don't look like you have money and you wont have problems. Also wipe all you coke bottles tops down before you drink them. Look at other Mexicans and act like them. |

What Don J wrote is a very good answer. Border towns are not the best of Mexico, don't expect scenic views in that area, $50 will not take you far anywhere in the world anyway. |

If the number of Mexicans crossing the border into the USA is any indication, Mexico may not be ther perfect place to visit. |
