I'm mexican and prefer butter.
BUT, the true is that the most of mexican housewives and people don't realize that they are buying margerine instead of butter.
The fact is that margerine is much more selled then butter, mainly because it is cheaper.
The mexican consumer is VERY un-informed on what he buys. You can see here many "milks" that are only a mix of casein, soy protein and non-butiric fat (it means, from vegetables, not from milk), very few people realize that. Also, many "cheese" in México is made without milk but sell out as natural cheese (made with celullose, vegetable fat, soy protein, artificial flavors and colors), not any ice "cream" is made with milk, those are made only with vegetable fat, sugar and colors.
I'm well informed on this, I'm a dairyman, we produce milk and our worst enemies in the industry are these. And, believe me, we have made polls to the people and we have seen, they DON'T know that they are buying margerine instead of butter, or "analogue" cheese (as the producers called the false cheese) instead of cheese. Mexican people never reads the nutritional label, of course it is added on the products by law, but it is never seen. |

Margarine is cheaper but butter is also big.
As for the ignorant guy who says most people don't realize they're getting margarine instead of butter, that's plain silly. Maybe it happened to him but the labels are pretty easy to read! |
