Hi, I am an American living in Mexico. Some of the cities that have been suggested to you are not medium size. Guadalajara is 8 million. Others are very touristy cities, like Cancun. If you would like a city of about 3/4 million , not very touristy, moderate expenses, and great climate, I would recommend Xalapa , Veracruz. Veracruz city is larger and has an extremely hot climate, tho it is a great place to visit also. There are great cultural events, many universities, languages schools, great shopping, many interesting placesnearby. If you would like more info., please email me. |

without a doubt i would go to guanajuato, guanajuato.
it is a low crime city and it is medium size...you would have no problem navigating the city.
the night life is really good, so you will never be bored...you can also get your share of culture with all the museums that the city has.
plus it is not far from other entertaining cities like Leon, San Miguel de Allende, Silao, Salamanca (great night life there!)
the only negative things about guanajuato is that it gets pretty hot during the summer..so if you dont like heat you might want to think it over..but other than that if you pick this place you wont regret it, trust me! |

guadalajara, jalisco is great because it has all the conveniences of mexico city, but without all the crime. and it's a much more managable size. there are plenty of job and education options for international people, and you are reasonably located to the beach, and other colonial towns.
if you want something smaller...but in mexico i would call it medium...go to aguascalientes, aguascalientes. this is a VERY clean and safe city, no big malls or anything (but they are within 45 minutes) one large state university and many good private colleges, several international companies such as Nissan, and American Standard, and centrally located in mexico. aguascalientes is the wealthiest state per capita. you'll see a wide variety of people here, from the very poor, to the very rich. tiny pueblas and the main city. also, the city is VERY easy to navigate and i would say an approachable size for someone new to mexico and the culture. however...it's not guadalajara. you may find yourself visiting the same restaurants and clubs over and over, only a few job options, and it's tought to break in and make friends in aguas. there are little to NO "non mexicans" but many english speakers...you may find yourself victim to steriotypes, and that can be tough. but don't get me wrong, the people are very kind...oh but it's hot hot hot. maybe guadalajara would be better for moderate temps. |
