If you want to go to an island, then Cozumel is the only islandd to think about. Cancun is an island connected to the mainland by bridges at the north and south ends. But Cancun is too crowded and too expensive.

Go to Chiapas region in the south. it's the poorest (and cheapest) region in mexico. It's beautiful, not too touristy and there are many nice things to see.
you can make the beautiful colonial city of San Cristobal de las casas your base and explore the villages surrounding it. great mayan ruins also not too far (especially Paenque, 4 hours away).
