What is the best way to carry money when in Cancun Mexico? |
I don't know the safest way to carry my money when I go on a trip to Cancun. I have heard that travlers checks are hard to use and not everyone takes them. I was thinking maybe buying a couple of those pre paid Visa or MasterCard's. I would assume that it isn't really that safe to carry all cash. Please help if you have any advise or experience. Thanks! |

ok..listen closely..take 1 major credit card..use atm machines for the best up to the minute exchange rates..(about 10 pesos for 1 american dollar) only get out a small amt at a time, just although it is easy to exchange aerican to pesos, not so easy when leaving..so u dont want to have a pocket full of pesos..wont have alot of luck re exchanging..dont carry alot of cash with you while walking around..its relatively safe, but dont be a fool wither..lock all ur stuff up in hotel safe. it is best to use pesos while there..remeber that they use the dollar sighn just as we do..something that says $30 means 3.00 american not 30..so be careful, i dont think vendors are gonna try to correct u. also..neg. prices BEFORE getting into a cab..about 15.00 american should get u almost anywhere..dont get ripped off...carry a neck wallet..that goes under ur clothes..it depends on what ur wanting to spend on how much u carry on u..also..dont forget to leave itenarary and phone numbers, namne of hotel and room number with someone u know and trust..just in case..and have fun..mexico is beautiful,,and the people are friendly..just dont drink the water..ever!..or eat fresh fruits or salads, being that they are usually rinsed or soaked in tap water..dont even use ice unless its purified water..no side vendors either...u might end up with Montezumas REvenge!!..have fun |

Hotel zone is safe. Hard to see the real Mexico when you limit yourself to that. Lots more to Cancun ( gringoville ) than whats outside your hotel.
Mikey suggest leaving jewelry at home. Passport in hotel room. Write down important phone #'s and leave cell phone at home.
Mikey knows ATM fees are high. Western Union yourself the $$$. When you get there it will be given to you @ any Western Union in pesos.............
Mikey say you are more likely to lose your $$$ thru not barganing and learning what things really cost. |

best way to carry money in cancun is your wallet! cancun is safe...unless you walk around parts of cuidad cancun looking for a trouble....and even then, ive never had trouble! the hotel zone is safer than most u.s cities and accept credit cards without trouble. cashing travelers checks is a pain and best done in banks for the best rate. i like to arrive with pesos in hand...so i go to a casa de cambio/cash exchange and exchange dollars for pesos with a lot of small bills (20 and 50 peso notes) or on the web with my amex card, they send it straight to your house. folks in cancun round off 10 pesos to a dollar so they will quote you a price in dollars...once you settle on a price, tell them you have pesos! advantage, tourist! |

I always travel with an ATM card.
- Machine limits are $300-5000 pesos (just under 300-500US), but you can always withdraw more than once.
- The exchange rate is better than travelers cheques, credit cards, and in most cases, exchanging cash.
- A lot of places don't accept credit/debit cards, although this is less of an issue in Cancun. You may get hit up for a fee for using a credit card though -- the banks here are very hard on merchants. |

I went to Cancun for vacation. I also stayed in the hotel zone which is very safe. The city doesn't want their tourists getting harmed in any way. I never felt unsafe carrying cash. I didn't carry large amounts of cash either. I had a safe in my hotel room and I kept all valuables and cash stored in there when I was away. I converted almost all of my pocket money to pesos and converted it back before coming back to the states. Overall it was a great experience that I would recommend to anyone. |
