If you mean Mexico the country I would say the most dangerous place right now is Ciudad Juarez. Not to say that you cannot go there. I mean, you can, but you would need to take lots of precautions if you go out by night or if you walk in certain areas of the city. Other than that the city is perfectly fine.

If you mean Mexico City, the most dangerous area is called "Tepito". It's a very low income neighborhood famous for flea markets and cheap stuff that may or may not be legal. Some streets are safer than others in this neighborhood but, in general, it's not recommended for tourists.

If you have the notion that Mexico is a dangerous country to visit I can tell you the media are just so wrong. They exaggerate everything and so people are afraid of coming to Mexico. Reality is that Mexico is a peaceful country with some criminality events in certain very specific areas lately. It's not like the minute you step into Mexico you will get killed or kidnapped. It's not like that. Life is normal. You just have to be cautious in certain areas at certain times, that's it.

Good luck.

Cuidad Juarez on the border of the U.S. is very dangerous because of drug gangs, most border cities on the Mexican side are like that. Mexico City is also extremely dangerous in the slum areas.

Andy
The borders, like Cd. Juarez and Reynosa, and even Tijuana.
