O.K., here's the real deal, just like Washington D.C. is a district, Mexico City is a federal district, it is not part of any state, however physically it is surrounded by the state of Mexico, that's right state of Mexico, plain and simple!

First Mexico City is NOT LOCATED IN A STATE.

Out of 32 federal entities, the other 31 being states with a governor, Mexico City is situated in the DISTRITO FEDERAL governed by a Mayor or Jefe de Gobierno. Distrito Federal (DF) is equivalent to a Distric Capital, such as Washington DC.

Mexico city is so big that is in 2 states.
The original mexico city is in the Distrito Federal or in english:
Federal district.
And the other state is named : Estado de Mexico or Mexican State, like the country name, normally mexico city is considered with out a state but really is in distrito felederal (where almost all the city is in) and estado de mexico (where the mayority of the population is)

The actual capital is in the Distrito Federal (Or Federal District). It is surrounded by the state of Mexico. (Yes, that is a STATE as well as the name of the country).

Similar to DC being surrounded by Virginia (on all but one side).

When most people speak of Mexico City, they are speaking of the cosmopolitan area that includes both the DF and that portion of the state of Mexico - all the way to Toluca.

And to Kathleen S ... get informed ... Mexico has states, just like the US.

Just to name a few: Mexico, Nuevo Leon, Guerrero, Jalisco, Sonora, Baja California Norte, Baja California Sur, Quintana Roo ... and so on. I believe there are 33 (although I may be off by one or two).

Just as we consider Washington DC to include the surrounding areas.

There is signage when you are there to let you know that you have crossed into or out of the DF, but nothing else. It's all one big area of 22 million people.

Distrito Federal, actually it is not a state, it is a District, as District of Columbia. It does not have cities, it has "delegations", which are like municipals in other states. It is wired, because they have to vote for chosing the "governor" and the "delegados", which are called "jefe de gobierno (chief of goverment)".

Distrito Federal is not at all in State of Mexico.

In Mexico, Mexico city is refered to like/as "city of Mexico" or just "Mexico". Although some may call it DF. The city of Mexico is located in the state of Mexico. And yes, the state is named Mexico. I have traveled there a few times and I know several mexicans who have told me this.

There is no 'state', like we have here in USA. Mexico City is in Mexico, period.
