I had no problem spending U.S. dollars there

The official and national currrency is the Mexican Peso but they also take USDollars gladly because of the high touristic flow throughout the year.
I'd suggest you check the exchange rate the day of your trip to make sure of what to expect if prompted to pay in mexican pesos, for example when you want to get a softdrink, a souvenir or catch a cab to look around the city.

You can pay with MX Pesos or US Dollars, but I suggest you change your dollars to pesos because on many establishments you're going to end up losing money because of their exchange rate.

US dollars widely accepted in tourist locations. Pesos only when paying utility bills. Small denominations 20USD are better for small stores they often don't have change.

pesos is the Mexican currency but $$ are accepted every where. If you use dollars make sure there are no rips because the banks won't accept them. If you use dollars, you will receive change in pesos.
If you are from Europe, you need to exchange, so I would use pesos. Why exchange twice.

They prefer peso's, but will take U.S. I have found that they won't take U.S. currency if it is ripped or torn in any way. Except maybe at your hotel.
