What is there to do in Mexico City?

I took a trip here because I thought it would be nice. Instead I am bored out of my mind. Everything is so expensive and there is nothing to do. Plus, I heard there is such a high crime rate here.

Can somebody who has been here please tell me of thing to do? I already looked in tourist guides and did that stuff, but nothing. And, is everything so expensive here or do I just pay so much because I am a tourist?
Additional Details
@Mark: All the public places where the tourists go are cheap. So admissions and subway prices are way lower than in the United States. But I pay so much for food here. More than in the United States. In addition, people expect tips for everything. Even when you park your car on the street some idiot comes up because he feels he needs to help you get into the spot. I live pretty far out, but don't want to be back past 5 p.m. because of the crazy crime rate. In the local park here people just get roobed like crazy. So that's why I am afraid to even step out of here at nighttime and take a 2 hour ride with bus and subway to the center of the city. Not to mention the smog and the crazy traffic. By the time you are back, you have no energy left to do anything.

And Mexico is expensive for being a country in which people earn so little. I pay around the same for tacos here at stands or nice restaurants as I do in the United States. Maybe I save $2 on a $20 bill.

You are obviously a troll because everything you say is BOGUS.

Mexico City is one of the largest cities in the world. It has more than 100 museums. It has some of the world's most stunning historical sites (like Teotihuacan, the Templo Mayor, and others). It has a spectacular hilltop castle that's been turned into an outstanding national history museum. It has a Six Flags theme park. It has some of the world's most exciting and innovative cuisine. It has DOZENS of vibrant nightclubs. It has kids activities. It has spectacular arts venues.

Not only does it have that stuff, but it has it AT CHEAP prices (which you would know, if you were REALLY in Mexico City!)

In Mexico City, you can get ANYWHERE in the city via the Metro subway system for about 15 cents (2 pesos). Many of the city's best attractions are TOTALLY FREE (their Chapultepec Zoo rivals the quality of the San Diego Zoo, but while the San Diego Zoo charges visitors a wallet-whomping $35 just to walk in the gate, the Chapultepec Zoo is FREE). Even some of the city's world-class museums that DO charge modest entry fees (typically less than $4, some as little as 80 cents) have FREE admission on Sundays --- which everybody who REALLY travels to Mexico City knows.

You bored in Mexico City???? Where do you come from? There is tenths of museums, Four or five of the best concert halls in America (have you tried Sala Netzahualcoyotl in Ciudad Universitaria? Or going to Palacio de Bellas Artes to see the Ballet Folclorico? Theater? Tenths of them, anything from commercial to cultural to experimental. Like sightseeing?, take a stroll in downtown (El Centro) colonial buildings older than the US. Pre-colombian ruins, restaurants with some of the best food in the world (Try Hosteria Santo Domingo in Belisario Dominguez st., close to Plaza Santo Domingo...where you can look at a 500 year old plaza with buildings, that old! Well, even any given Sanborns will present you with an extraordinary set of options of quite decent Mexican food! (Oh, sorry, no burritos, chimichangas or Nachos with cheese and salsa-that belongs to Texas cuisine) Or, try going for a jog in Chapultepec. In that park you will find 15 museums. From Antropologia e Historia (1 full week to visit all its halls), Modern Art, Natural History, etc.
Now, what do you enjoy doing? Photography? (don't take your expensive DSLR camera anywhere, carry a cheap point and shoot and you will be able to get some amazing shots almost anywhere. Sports is your thing? Go to the Estadio Azteca and see a good soccer game any friday evening or sunday at noon. Folclore? Go visit Coyoacan, San Angel or Tlalpan...nice old towns that still keep the flavor of belonging to another era.
Man, you are sure lucky to be there!
Expensive? Try London, Paris, or Tokyo or Seoul, THOSE ARE expensive. Relax a little and enjoy life wherever you go...not worth suffering it.

it is a big dirty city, but it is incredibly rich with history, art and architecture. the things to do are endless and much of it is free. many historical building filled with art cost nothing and the streets and parks are filled with interesting things for free.

Click the link below and read about 282 things to do around Mexico City.
Have you been to National Museum of Anthropology (Museo Nacional de Antropologia)? I think it's one of the most interesting museums in the world.
Have you been out to Teotihuacan and imagined how it might have been in 600 AD with thousands of traders selling goods from all over MesoAmerica?
Have you been to the Zocalo? No charge to go there.
Have you been in the Catedral Metropolitana, just off the Zocalo? No charge to go in there.

Go see the pyramids. You can climb all the way to the top. Or you can go down twon and see the Indipendence Bbuilding that's right next to the Cathedral. Or go to the Latin American Building. You can see the whole city from the roof.

There is a little town called Amecameca about two hours away from the city that has an active volcano that is always smoking. It's pretty cool too. Also, in a town called Cuotla they have a natural sulfer pool. The sulfer comes from the active volcano. If you've never swam in a natural sulfer pool, I highly suggest it. It's a totally cool experience.

You can alos take a boat ride through the river that goes into the city. The river is all that's left from the lake that used to be Mexico City.

Read up on some of the history for the city. There are tons of things to do.

Oh, and maybe your getting taken for a fool, because Mexico City isn't that expensive. You need to get someone who knows the language and there way around to show you. Plenty of people would take advantage of someone who looks like a tourist. And yes, it is dangerous. My husbands and his family grew up there,a dn there are certain places my father-in-law wouldn't even go at night time.

My husband is from Mexico, just about two hours from the airport. There is a ton to do in the city. I have only been to Teotihuacan and the Basilica. I recommend both. I didnt however make it into the pyramids gates because I was sick and didnt want to climb the stairs. But I stood and looked at them from the outer gate and took some pics. I see many other recommend a lot of other great things to see and do and now I know what to do when I return. I didnt realize how cheap it was to get into things like the zoo. Or about the free attractions like some of the museums (I knew of them but didnt know they are free). I also would like to see the castle. I would also be interested in taking a ride on the colorful boats at Xochimilco. I have been to the city only a few times and havent had any problems. However I have not been there overnight. I do agree that you have to be careful and watch your back. but dont be such a hermit and get out there and see mexico while you are there. I wish I could be there right now. And I disagree about it being expensive...its extremely cheap there. Maybe people are asking you for more $$ because you are a tourist. dont be afraid to barter-its quite common there. And if you can, try buying food to cook on your own if you are worried about eating out too much and the cost of doing so.

every thing is suppose to be cheap because of the crisis on the economy and threes nothing to do there is boring as hell and a high rate of crimes GET OUT OF THERE

Well, you have three main options: Get kidnapped, get mugged, or get murdered. Your choice.
