I lived with two different Mexican families over the course of 10 weeks and 2 summers.
Breakfast with one family was corn flakes (yes, Kellogg's!) and a fruit plate with mango, pineapple, bananas, watermelon, oranges, and guayaba. Another family gave us the choice of French toast, eggs, and pancakes. We drank fruit juice. In the restaurants, there would be eggs with refried beans and shredded cheese on top of the eggs with fresh fruit. There would be red sauce on the eggs.
Around 2:00 everyone goes home for comida, which is the big meal of the day. Warm tortillas, which are bought at the local tortilleria fresh, are always served. They don't taste like the slabs like are sold in the refrigerator section in the USA. They are soft and have a much more flavorful corn taste.
Usually there is a soup course and a main dish served with rice and cooked vegetables. Rice and salsa picante are served on the side. The main dish might be enchiladas, picadillo (a stew with beef or ground beef), chicken, chiles poblanos (dark hot peppers stuffed with cheese, fried in whipped egg), tamales, flautas (deep fried tightly rolled tortillas with a meat filling) or pork with a sauce. There is usually a small dessert. One of my host families owned a restaurant, and we usually had cake, ice cream, or pie for dessert. The beverage was normally fruit water (juiced fruit with sugar and water). One local restaurant had tacos with a soft flour shell, and we'd pick the fillings (mole, green mole, chicken, refried beans, egg, etc.)
For the evening supper, we would usually have something light, like a torta (a sandwich in Mexico), ham and cheese sandwich, or a quesadilla. One family had chamomille tea with supper (té de manzanilla), or fruit water.
At restaurants, you can get a lot of the same food in the USA. They tend to be heavier with the spices. At Burger King and KFC, they have packets of jalepeño sauce to add as you wish.
One food that is served for breakfast, snack or dessert is churros. They are strips of dough deep-fried and rolled in cinnamon sugar. They are dunked in hot chocolate, but many people just buy them and eat them out of the bag. |

what you eat depends largely on what social class you are in. someone who was short on cash would eat lots of beans and tortillas, maybe gorditas (kind of like tortillas with cheese inside) and quesadillas.
someone REALLY short on cash might eat tortillas rolled up with salt, and a litre of coke.
a middle class or wealthy family would eat lots of fresh fruits and veggies, meats such as pork or beef, possibly seafood. very similar to the US really. however staples at every meal are tortillas, key limes, alvacados, and usually a spicy type of chile to season the food. special treats might include stuffed chiles, tacos, or enchiladas.
mexicans do not eat dessert with every meal, but popular desserts are flan, a gelatin type candy, and tres leches cake. also a type of dry cheesecake....not the moist kind we have in the US.
drinks include flavored waters such as lemon water, jamaica (kind of like a red, bitter tea brewed with the jamaica flower,) sodas of course, and mineral water.
mexicans who have the money to go out also enjoy pizza (with ranch or chimichurri sauce on it,) sushi, and italian foods. a popular social activity is to meet for coffee and crepes, or a toasted sandwich. also hamburgers and hotdogs are popular for some reason. but the hamburgers come with cheese all the time.
rarely to mexicans eat american fast food because it's NOT cheap in mexico, and they all know it's made americans fat, so they stay away. |

I categorize Mexican food into street food and home cooked meals. Street food includes tortas, tacos (tongue, intestine, al pastor, etc), potato chips, pan dulces (sweet breads), flautas, fruit (they LOVE fruit here with yogurt and granola or lemon and chili), roasted chickens, etc. Home cooked meals always include rice, beans, and tortillas. Plus, a guisado.....a stewed meat of some sort: chicken, beef, and pork. They LOVE to top if off with aguas de frutas.....guayaba, melon, tamarindo, etc. Desserts include fruit juice Popsicle, cakes, pastries, ice cream. I must say....the food is delicious, but Mexican could learn a few tricks when baking. Usually the pastries are VERY dry. |

They eat the "real" Mexican food for the most part of the day... which consists of a meat, beans, rice and tortillas. You will rarely see a meal missing 1 or 2 of these items...
And for the people that have a little cash left over, they will hit Burger King, Mickie D's, Domino's, KFC and Pizza Hut... just the way we do here... =O) |

I just had to check out this question, you have been looking for four hours to see what kind of food people eat in Mexico?!?!?! MEXICAN FOOD!!!!
Anyways, when I am staying with my in-laws, we eat mexican food such as beans, rice, tortillas, pan dulce, etc. In the morning we usually had eggs and beans with tortillas, juice, coffee, pan dulce and fruit. For dinner, some sort of meat and tortillas, pan dulce or cookies, soda or juice etc. My MIL also made home-made french fries and other foods that we are familiar with. I thaught them to make lasgna, though they added hot sauce to it :-) . My MIL and FIL have never had fast food or pizza. On one of the last days I was there last time I went, my brother-in-law bought local pizza and we had that for dinner, was my MIL and FIL's first time eating pizza!!! It was nothing like our pizza, had no sauce on the pizza itself, but came with catschup or hot sauce that you could add to your piece as you desir-yuck!! But I hear the Pizza Huts down there make it the same like here. The other fast food looks very different as far as what they offer, but I have never tried it, and neither has anyone in my husband's family, all the fast food is too far away in Mexico City. |
