What papers do you need right now to go to mexico? I mean do you have to have a passport?
Are you an American citizen? A passport is sufficient for short trips, anything more than a couple of days will require a visa.
Though they say that the passport requirement for american citizens is not enforced till june, i wouldn't take the risk considering the DHS/TSA aren't exactly.... the most intelligent and most updated government workers.

Here is the straight info with no guesses...passports are required to FLY to and from Mexico. They are NOT yet needed for LAND and SEA travel. That requirement has not been implemented yet, but will be by June 2009. Now..you need a photo i.d. and proof of citizenship...which can be a passport OR birth certificate. See site below for current info.

it's not really necessary to have a passport, but it's better to. you will need a passport to get back into your country though. you don't need anything else in mexico unless working or studying, in that case you will need visa, most likely. It's better to bring identification with you where ever you go.

north America still only requires a proof of citizenship and valid photo id to enter Mexico. but if you are from Canada you must have a passport even just to land in the u.s. for a stopover. as long as you are flying direct you need only the other. but you may very well need a passport to get back into the u.s. even if you are American, not to up to date on there policies. hope you have a great vacation

yup- gotta have a passport - you can usually get one from the postoffice, or if you have a major university in your hometown you can get it there - you can look online @ passport.com or something like that, it will guide you to the correct government sight and give you the downloadable form - you can also expidite the process by paying additional $$$- i needed to go to cancun and found out about 5 weeks prior to the depart date - i expedited the passport process and got my passport in about 6 days - if you're not in a hurry, i've heard it takes about 5 weeks.

Yes, you need a passport. I just returned from Mexico 3 weeks ago and we had to have a passport to re-enter the US
