some place on the caribean side, the water is much more clear and peaceful. check out vacation packages, cozumel and cancun are nice.

Americans seem to love Cancun. Very Americanized city with a lot of luxury hotels, American style bars and a lot of english speaking people.
Notice it will be INFESTED with stoopid springbreakers when you want to go there. My sister who lives in the area says they are vulgar, bad tippers and do a lot of damage to the hotels. If you don't want to be near that kind of people, choose a far less obvious place.

I don't go to beaches that much (not much of a sun lover), but the best places for a person like me are rustic little sleepy towns with virgin beaches. Notice you probably won't find 5 star hotels with everyone speaking english and accepting credit cards or international airports in the area. You'd have to get to these kinds of places in old buses travelling in bumpy dirt roads but I find these kinds of trips to be really fun. If you respect the locals, they will treat you great and will even remember who you are if you come back and treat you even better. Plus you'll be able to eat authenic mexican seafood at inhumanely low prices.

The fact that virgin beaches are great if you don't mind losing luxuries like hot water in your shower, you should enjoy yourself.

These kinds of villages are all over the country, though you might find something you like in Oaxaca, Chiapas or Michoacán (I personaly love Veracruz for it's food and people). Expect to bring sleeping bags and mosquito repellants if you want to go to these kinds of places. Dengue is a serious disease.

If you want to go to a real city beach, I strongly recommend you to avoid Acapulco. Can't swim in the water because of the tide, beaches are dirty, full of naco poor people with kids swimming in their used diapers and there isn't much to do in the city. Veracruz is far nicer though the city is more industrial than resort.

Here's a site with info on the Riviera Maya.

Riveria Maya [south of Cancun] is supposed to be very nice. Cozumel would be nice, too, although there will be people from cruise ships there, too.

Go to TripAdvisor.com and check out their forums and other info.

i went on a cruise to cozumel it totally rocked

I'd say Cancun or Mazatlan, they're both very nice right on the beach and huge tourist attraction spots so you won't have trouble with the language barrier.
Good luck!!
