What salary should I ask for this job - hotel in PV? |
I'm completely lost and the great people of Y!A always seem to help.
I've got a job offer at a top rated hotel in PV. They are a 21 room resort with prices ranging from $200 a night to $600 a night. They host a lot of weddings, and really that's what most of their customers are there for.
I have two years of experience being a front desk manager at hotels in the U.S. and I am knowledgable in most areas of running a hotel.
They are going to start me out working reception with the chance to move up if they are satisfied with my work. One problem, the owner keeps asking me what salary I expect and I don't know what to tell him. He said he would pay me comparable to jobs in the U.S.
Please help, I don't want to mess this chance up by expecting too much but I don't want to sell myself cheap. Additional Details And I don't really understand why he would pay me so well, maybe it is too good to be true? |

well I am PV native and live in Alaska now. But have a lot of interaction in PV still. Have worked several of the hotels there and the tourist industry.
Most executive jobs in PV make around 1000 USD a month salary. Perhaps not sure why he would pay you US wages when he can hire the same type of help there for less money. And people there are very well trained to do the job. Don't get me wrong it just seems too good to be true. Perhaps the hotel owner is not aware of the overpopulation willing to do good work for little pay. Or perhaps he has a special iterest in you.
Ask 2 to 3 k p/mo to start with and then if he makes you manager ask for 3 to 4. (3500 a mo its a 42k per yr) not bad for the states very nice in PV Mexico. Heck if I can get that kind of pay I move back in a heart beat. I am bilingual after all you'll have to comunicate with maids and the help.
Feel free to email me. I have contacts there to get more info.
Good luck to you. |

I am answering this question because I worked in Mexico and its not what you would expect! My first job was teaching english at a school that was very well known through out Mexico, they payed me 45 pesos an hour, which is around $4.25 more or less. Probably less! And that was damn good money for Mexico! Trouble was I only worked 2 or 3 hours a day! Then I worked as a tour guide but that was for my self so I made my own price.I applied for a job at one of those exclusive hotels in Manzanillo for cook, and they offered me 100 pesos a day! How much do you think that is? Thats right! So I wouldn't have any great expectations about pay, in fact I would tell the dude that you would like to see what his offer would be considering your qualifications.Tell him something like your not familiar with the pay rates down their and would like to here his offer. In other words try and get him to come first with his offer.Hopefully it's more then 100 pesos a day. When they gave me that offer I laughed all the way home while drinking a beer.I couldn't believe their was actually places like that in the world!! |

Hey Jessy! Still trying to get back to Mexico? Well me too :P I'm going back to Guad in January :) Thanks for answering my question, now I owe you one.
From what I have heard from a lot of locals, most of the Hotel workers in the resorts in Mexico make about $1000 USD a month, tax free. But not much more than that unless your in like a management position.
At least that's the case for the entertainers (those who perform in the shows and whatnot). As far as I know they also get room and board at the hotel and they eat free (if it's an all-inclusive resort). My wife is a Mexican (Tapatia!) and has been offered jobs at resorts as a dancer and that's what they would pay her. She has also just told me that someone in reception would make the same.
So thats my understanding anyway. You could try for more, but I don't know if you'll get it! In fact, I'd be pretty surprised if he would go higher than that. If thats the case though, at $1K / Month I say go for it! I made that when I first got hired in Guadalajara and I worked for a prestigous IT company. Great choice BTW, I'd love to live in PV.. But I'll settle for it's neighbor. It's home to me now :) |

Depending on your experience I'd ask for ~$15-$18 an hour starting. or ~32k-36k a year if it's salary. |
