What should I wear in Mexico?

I'm going there in a couple days, spending a week in Mexico City, then going through the following towns: Puebla, Veracruz, Villahermosa, Palenque, and ending up in San Cristobal de las Casas for a few days.

I know it's going to be unavoidable to look like a tourist, so I'm just trying to dress in a way that won't offend anyone. Are tank tops / halter tops okay, and where could I wear shorts?

At this time of the year, Mexico its really hot, in Mexico city you would only need a light jacket, it normally rains but not very hard.
On the other hand when you reach palenque you could literally only wear your bikini top and shorts, its very very hot there, in San Cristobal de las casas can be quite cold at night, bear in mind the Puebla and San Cristobal are quite high, so i'd recommend to bring a little bit of everything, just to be prepared.

A fleece jacket for San Cristobal and Puebla its a good idea, a very light rain jacket for Mex city and basically your smallest garments for the beaches and palenque.

i would NOT wear shorts or halter tops. i know you're going to be hot....but, nobody wears those. i don't see a lot of ladies wearing skirts either...but mexico city is MUCH more like the US than other cities in mexico, so...i guess dressing the way you do at home works fine. how about knee length skirts (or longer) and pants in a light fabric. tank tops with some cardigan sweaters to cover up with, and maybe some sun dresses.

if you go into a church or government building, you NEED to cover your shoulders and knees. it's just polite and respectful.

Light clothes. Comfortable clothes. Bring sun block. I got 2nd degree burns some time back.
It is a lovely place, hot and very sunny.
And you are a tourist and accepted. Every garment you mentioned is fine.
the ladies at the beach took their tops off so do not feel bad about a hatller in Mexico.

Charlie
Some of the places you mentioned are at high altitude and are NOT very hot....prob. mid 70's in the day and 55 to 65 at nite. So you may need a lt. sweater of jacket in the evening. Otherwise, t shirts or tank tops and skirts or jeans or capri pants. In beach areas you may wear shorts, but otherwise...No One in Mexico wears shorts....you will definetly look like a tourist if you wear shorts anywhere but on or near the beach.

I have always been advised never to wear shorts in Mexico City (same with halter tops) because you have to worry about some of the men. I had a friend who wore a short skirt (not too short, but just above the knee) and we were just walking down the street and this guy came up and put his hand up the skirt. Another friend went on the metro wearing shorts and this guy rubbed against her and well...her shorts were covered with stuff afterwards.

I don't think it would be as bad in Puebla. I'm not sure about the other places.

tanks tops and halters are ok, but in Mexico City people dress more formal, so if you plan to have dinner in a nice restaurant, you should pack some formal cloth (it could be jeans and nice blouse) , however every tourist, specially americans wear shorts and tanks tops and not a problem!

Ram
Shorts and tanks; it's gonna be warm (except maybe at night you might wear some jeans, etc).

You will look like a foreigner regardless... but only you taking pictures with the camera makes you look like a tourist... =O)

wear something comfortable and dont worry about offending people cause it will be hot in some of those places. (Just dont let your booty hang out or your boobs) lol...and you will be fine~ Yes and take suncreen with you!

Mexico is extremely hot this time of year. Shorts, tank tops, halters with good taste. Sun dresses at the nice restaurants. Shorts are acceptable but check before entering. Take your sunscreen lotion because you will burn. Don't buy it there, its expensive. Sandals and tennis shoes for walking. Don't carry your camera in hand.

Mexico is a very warm country
if you donot need anything special, I suggest you take bermudas, shorts, t shirts and a long voile skirt. If you donot have one, you will see plenty there to buy.

Nice trip!!!

Google "I'm going on vacation in Mexico and I haven't a clue what I should wear ... do you?" and they will send you pictures with circles, arrows and a paragraph on the back of each one describing what clothing items you need to take!

I hope I've been a help!
