You got a lot of smart-mouth, negative answers...not helpful at all...and obviously from people who only wanted 2 points fr having nothing to say! I hope you will be visiting with people who know the city well. Yes, go to some of the museums, shop in the specialized markets, go to good retaurants. I hope your friends can also take you to visit some of the small towns in the region. Try to go to some local theatrical performances of trditional music and traditional regional dancing. Hope you have a great time.

There are some lovely towns to visit. Some are known for specific things; like silver or weaving or pottery.
I enjoyed visiting Puebla and walking inside of a pyramid!

That was way cool.

It depends on what part of Mexico you are visiting. If you are visiting Mexico City, la Zona Rosa is the popular choice for upscale shopping and dining pleasures; Constitution Square has a modern building, a cathedral built by the Spanish and an Aztec temple that was found in the 70s during construction if you like a flair for the historic. Chapultepec is on a hill in the center of town with many museums to choose from as well as some great views. Floating gardens, Lady of Guadalupe church, bullfights, festivals or concerts in the Zocalo are a few other sites to see. But it is also home to the muralist movement as well as the place of Trotsky's murder! Great day trips from here are to Taxco for the silver capital of the world, the pyramids at Teotihuacán which shouldn't be missed.

What part of Mexico?
I have to say, eat... try the mole (like chocolate spicy sauce), the candy, the sweet bread.
Try to go to towns, almost every town has a unique handcraft (of typical dish) with a story to tell.
Visit something about the history: museums, pyramids, galleries, old constructions like cathedrals or monasteries.
Find a "nature" thing to do, hiking, going to a mountain, swimming in the ocean... there are a lot of natural reserves, each place very special and different

Take pictures, smile, drink bottled water, relax, have fun.

Depends on what part you are going to. There is a great anthropolgy museum in mexico city. Visit the pyramids. The national palace has great murals by famous artist diego rivera. Xochimilico is a cool boat ride down a canal that used to be floating gardens. Go to a plaza or an outside market. Try to eat Mexican food. I went in 2000 with my senior class and we ate at american resteraunts! That was my one regret.

Have fun!
