If u have plenty of time:
* Chichen-Itza (mayan pyramids, considered one of the actual wonders of the world). A 2 hour bus trip from can-cun
* Tulum (more pyramids). A fantastic archeological place by the sea.
* Xel-Ha. Great place if you want to snorkel, and swim with the dolphins
* X-Caret. Great ecological place to get in contact with the regional culture. Dont miss the night show.
* You can visit valladolid or Merida. These are really nice colonial places. If you Go to merida go to a place called "Heladios" for aproximately 10 bucks you can eat great regional food and a couple of beers. If you have a sensitive stomach, avoid the food 'cause its too spicy. Its a 4 hour trip from can cun.
* If you want to go bar hopping any place in the comercial area in cancun will help. You have to be 18 to drink, dont drink on the street (unless you want to spend a night in jail or brive a policeman), dont accept invitations from strangers, they are huntting tourists.
A car would be fine if you want to split the fare with your friends, but renting a car in mexico is more expensive than in the states.
Public transportation is not that bad, and most of the tour operators will take you from your hotel to the place you wan to visit ( xel ha, xcater, isla mujeres, tulum) for a quite resonable price.
If you buy a tour, DONT but it on the street, go to a travel agency, unless you want to donate a couple hundred dollars to a mexican thief.
Enjoy your stay! its paradise on earth!! |

In Cancun there are about 140 hotels with 24,000 rooms and 380 restaurants. Four million visitors arrive each year in an average of 190 flights daily. The hotel zone is one of the most exclusive internationally, with upmarket restaurants, bars, and the like which have catered for quite a number of the rich and famous. The hotel zone tends to be rather expensive as it is aimed at visitors and relies on the all inclusive hotels to keep them all in this area allowing prices to soar. Downtown is home to less expensive places to shop like Walmart, Comercial Mexicana and Soriana, not to mention several flea markets like the one in the hotel zone.
Around March and April, Cancun experiences a flood of college students (usually from the United States) who travel to Cancun to party. For just about all of these students, drinking alcohol is usually the reason why they come to Cancun. The drinking age in Mexico is 18; while in the United States, it is 21.
Downtown Cancun gives us a different aspect. There are also many clubs for all types of people, including gay clubs like Karamba or Glow, but the hotels are more accessible to all types of travelers, including some with lower rates. International brands in Downtown area are Radisson Hacienda Cancun, Best Western Plaza Caribe, Oasis America.
From Cancun to Chichen-Itza (ancient Mayan city), it's 2 and a half hours (2 and 35 exactly).
Ruins in CancunThe temperature of the city is warm, moderated by the marine breeze which circulates through its avenues. The temperatures are typically between 26°C and 36°C (78.8°F and 96.8°F).
Cancun's hotel zone also has an interactive aquarium where visitors can see the marine diversity of the area, swim with dolphins and feed sharks. Here and there in the hotel zone are some ancient ruins.
The main language in Cancun is Spanish, although English is widely spoken throughout the tourist areas. Mayan dialects are also spoken between some workers and people born in the Yucatan peninsula.
Cancun is served by Cancun International Airport. From Cancun to Chichen-Itza (ancient Mayan city), it's 2 and a half hours. |

Both years I went on some excursion to maroma ranch. First year I went horseback riding. Second year I did the combo pack of snorkeling, atv, speed boats. The beach at Maroma ranch was voted worlds best beach by travel channel 2-3 years ago. I give it a very high recommendation. Its an hour bus ride south of Cancun, so it is very quiet, very peaceful, and very relaxing. |

I went in June 2004 with my homegirls for our senior trip and we had soooo much fun! You'll enjoy being in Cancun so much that no matter what you do you won't feel like you're wasting your time! But since you asked... The City, Coco Bongos, Senor Frogs, Fat Tuesday, Daddy O's, Daddy Rock, Margaritaville, Planet Hollywood, La Boom/La Tequila (next door), ride the bus to get tequila coupons, take a day to see something cultural (unfortunately I neglected to do so). Oh yeah...If you're adventurous, go jet skiing; its breathtaking to see the marine life under you when out in the gulf. The water is sooo beautiful! Have fun, be safe, and never stray from your group!!! |
