Go to Guanajuato, Oaxaca, Taxco. Non touristic Places. Cancun is a tourist trap. Know the real Mexicans, the real food, you will be amazed. Get in touch with the real people from typical towns. Eat the most eccentric food ever. Real Tacos, real enchiladas...get drunk with real tequila!

It depens wot kind of places do ya like, if ya got enogh money go to la Riviera Maya or Cancun, maybe Los Cabos or Puerto Vallarta...the south of mexico is rich in culture, warm, nice and beauty, Chiapas or Oaxaca can be an other option, and if ya like pyramids, well Tabasco, and Campeche, Quintana Roo (south border with Belize and Guatemala) would be great...
try to be in a very mexican place without to much tourist...

*SALINA CRUZ
*ZICATELA
*CHACAHUA
*PUERTO ANGELITO
-- BY THE WAY ALLL OF THESE ARE IN THE STATE OF OAXACA, MEX.
it is a great place to visit...I was born there... BUT EVERY TIME I GO I DISCOVER SOMETHING DIFFERENT..
-- IN THE CITY OF OAXACA... YOU CAN FIND

*monte alban
*iglesia de santo domingo (its the most beautiful church i've seen in my life... and if you go... you will agree with what i just said)
*iglesia de la soledad
*el arbol del tule (one of the biggest if not the biggest and oldest tree in the world)
*Mitla
*Hierve el Agua
*OAXACA IS THE ONLY STATE THAT HAS BLACK POTTERY (IT ORIGINATED THERE) AND IF YOU SEE IT SOMEWHERE ELSE IN MEXICO... IT WAS EXPORTED FROM OAXACA... they have the secret... to making black pottery... its beautiful.. try san bartolo coyotepec.

You won't find any of these places in any guide, but they are really nice!
Coyoacán
Tlalpan
Museo Dolores Olmedo
Cuicuilco
Polanco
La Condesa
Zona Rosa
Coyoacán, Tlalpan, Polanco and La Condesa are neighborhoods, but they are really nice. First two places used to be small towns around the city, so they have their own kind-of cathedral, small arts and crafts markets, their own zocalo, etc...
Polanco and La Condesa are newer sites, and they are the most European part of Mexico, many fancy shops (Armani, etc), many nice restaurants and really nice and clean streets.
Zona Rosa is near Reforma (one of the largest and nicest streets in Mexico City), you can find nice restaurants and pedesterian streets.
Also visit Teotihuacan, Tepoztlan, Cholula... around MexCity, if you have more time go to Oaxaca City and Oaxaca state's coast, Acapulco, Guanajuato, Zacatecas... You'll visit a great, safe, cleand and friendly country!
