Bagalood is correct. Guanajuato is a beautiful colonial town with many cultural activities. It is also very, very safe. I lived there for six months and there were never any problems. You will find a great mix of Mexicans and foreigners living there and it has an excellent university. It is a town, however, and you have to travel about 45 minutes to Leon to have US type stores and restaurants. I used to go to Leon about once a month. Whatever you decide, be sure to visit first and spend some time in the city. I lived in Mexico for 8.5 years and loved it.
Give us a little more information about what you are looking for and we can be more specific. |

Ajijic is very nice, it's a town where many north Americans have moved to retire. It is not a city.
The Guadalajara metropolitan area is the best city in Mexico. The city is very big and like any major metropolitan city, has areas of crime and traffic. However, the city also has very beutifull areas that are safe. Guadalajara is known for what Mexico is known for: Tequila, Mariachis.
Puerto Vallarta is great. My parents just moved there from Florida and they have fallen in love. The city is small, there are more than 3000 restaurants. The beaches are pretty and in the surrounding areas beutifull. Its a very artistic city... And its on the coast. only 3 1/2 hours away from Guadalajara.
If I was looking deeper in-land towards the center of the country, I would consider the city of Cholula. Adjacent to Puebla, Cholula is a small univerisity city with pyramids and a very beutifull country. Cholula is really traditional Mexico, with alot of young energy from the college. Its a safe town too.
You really do not have to worry about being a gringo when you are in Mexico. Just use your regular common sense and you will stay out of trouble. |

Hello.
Ajijic (a-he-hic) is NOT a big city, but it is closed to Guadalajara, wich is NOT a safe city.
In my opinion, some cities as you are asking (big, safe, they don't care if you are american) could be the next:
In central México (this is the area where I live):
Querétaro, León, San Luis PotosÃ, San Miguel de Allende (not big, but beauty and there are many americans living there), Tepatitlán, Aguascalientes, Guanajuato (beautiful), Zacatecas. I think the best are Querétaro, San Luis Potosà and Aguascalientes. |

aguascalientes is a great city for you. firstly, it has the highest per capita income of the entire country. it's also small enough for you to get a handle on the city. it has very nice areas, and then normal areas, but they are all safe...except for one area of the city which i don't care for, you would have no reason to ever go there and i doubt you'd find it even if you tried.
this city is not touristy, and you will not find many americans there. but you will find a number of wealthy, highly educated mexicans who speak english fluently.
in addition, it's 5 hours from DF, 3 hours from Guadalajara, 45 mins from Zacatecas, and 5 hours from the beach. it's in a very central location in the country.
i have never ever felt unsafe in this city, and i lived there for a year and a half. i've walked alone, late at night and i was fine. recently there was a shooting, involving drugs in aguas. but you could tell by the reaction of the city that it was highly, highly unusual. people were outraged, and they have taken very serious action to make sure something like that doesn't happen again.
guadalajara is cool, and it has all the modern facilities like the US, but there are many nasty areas, and the nice areas are extremely expensive. |

guanajuato is a great place...its not a big city but it is very safe. san miguel de allende is also a really good place...theres a large community of americans there so being white wont be a problem.
and like other people said, aguascalientes and morelia are also great places....ive stayed at all these places and they are very safe and the people are friendly so you really cant go wrong with any of these places |

Monterrey the 3er city in Mexico only behind of Guadalajara (2nd) and Mexico City (1st).
Monterrey is known the industrial and finance capital because most of the biggest companies are there like GRUPO FEMSA (The 2nd biggest Coca-Cola company out of US, and its the same of Corona beer), nationals banks like (Banorte), airlines companies like (aviacsa, aerolitoral). Monterrey (MTY) is a safe and clean city, crime is low.In Monterrey there is the most rich community of all Mexico, most of rich live there and Mexico City. But if u like beaches Los Cabos, Puerto Vallarta, Veracruz, Manzanillo, Cancun, Huatulco all these beaches are nice. Many americans live in Mexico most of them in Puerto Vallarta, Los Cabos, Veracruz, Puebla. Othes europan people live in San Luis Potosi, Mazatlan, Merida (near pyramids), and Cancun. |

Mexico City can be great. It is the richest city in the country by far, there are an infinite amount of things to do and it really is fun and beautiful. Some of the nicer neighborhoods are Lomas, Polanco, Pedregal, La Herradura, Lomas Country, Tecamachalco. There are thousands of Americans there and it is a great place. As far as safety is concerned, you just stay away from bad neighborhoods and be smart. I actually went to school in The American School Foundation www.asf.edu.mx and it was great, everyone spoke english and it is just like living in the US. I lived there 20 years and never was the victim of any crime. |
