We are going to Cancun and want to know the best way to pay for things? Cash (american or pesos)? Do they accept credit cards at all bars and clubs? What about at shops? I do not want to take a ton of cash if not necessary. Please help

American cash is KING. You will have a safe in your room to use. I brought oodles of cash and had no worries with the safe usage. Any way, it's vacation and you're not there to worry, you are there to relax and enjoy. Pesos are a pain to figure out how to convert and everyone and I mean everyone takes greenbacks. Credit cards are accepted in more places than you can believe in a third world country. However, I'd save your cash and use the cards until you get closer to the end of your trip-the cash money goes fast. By the way-and this is for everyone afraid to use their credit cards and bank cards, check your fine print as most cards limit you to a $50 maximum penalty if they are stolen and abused. Not to mention a bunch of free warranties no one knows about.

If this is your first trip there you should repost a question with recommended places to go. Have fun.

When I was there, you pay with cash or pesos. Cash is always accepted there.

I wouldn't take a credit card with you because you are in a foreign country. I learned about that by speaking to a Mexican that worked at our resort. There is a good chance that you wouldn't have to worry about identity theft or stole CC number but that risk is always there in a foreign country. Remember, there laws are totally different than ours about that stuff.

If you don't want to take cash, then get travelers checks from your bank. We always take allot of cash with us on vacation and leave most of it in the hotel safe. We are the only ones that know the number to the safe so it is very safe in there.

Have fun

i take both cash and credit, depends on the exchange rate, the love us dollars, great for a tip take lots of singles. if you charge the rate will be calulated different on your bill

Dollars are accepted all over in Cancun. I would take a combination of cash, credit card and your ATM card. Just be aware if you use your ATM card they disperse only pesos.

Bring small bills for tipping, small purchases, bus fare etc.
The ATM will not give you small bills so be prepared and bring plenty of one dollar bills and 5 dollar bills.

We used our credit card for excursions and any charges at our hotel. We stayed at an all-inclusive but still tipped the bartenders, maids etc.

If you're from the USA, I'd use dollars. If your from Other countries I would only convert once and it would be pesos.

Have a great trip. Enjoy

US $ go a long way there. At your hotels use credit or travel checks. Out and about use US cash.

TravelbyBob
You have 2 options. 1.) USD's are accepted everywhere, and is advantagous, because the exchange rate you typically get at a cambio is between 10.6 - 10.8. If paying w/ USD's the vendor or merchant will round up to 11 to get your business.

2.) Credit/Debit cards, paying w/ them you get the best exchange rate throughout the billing cylce of when the card was used. Just make sure you are protected w/ a limit if lost or stolen.

Audrey
well when i go you can use either cash or pesos. but i have never use my card there... so im not sure about that. i know that when you go to the atms that they give you pesos and not dollars.

:-D

stupid question. pesos. (not dollars)

We put most meals on American express and Visa. Take a decent amount of cash though because it is almost impossible to find an ATM in Cancun.
