Whats with all these Cancun questions?

There are so many better places to go in Mexico. It's this horde asking all these questions that make it such a zoo

Come on, Sparks! Unlike you, you know the only reason why most Americans go to Mexico isn't because they are interested in exploring another culture, learning about the history of another place, etc. but, rather, because they can go somewhere to party, shop and play on the beach and spend quite a bit less money than a similar vacation in Miami or L.A. The reasons most Americans gravitate towards Cancun, sadly, is because it is the most modern, most-Americanized city in all of Mexico; Americans go there because so they can enjoy the "all-inclusive" perks at the resorts, go shopping at designer botiques, and get smashed partying at the clubs. Obviously, Cancun attracts the young American party-going set, many wealthy American tourists that demand only the best service and resorts, and, many inexperienced travelers who want things as familar as home as possible- I know it was where we were directed to go by our travel agent on our first trip to Mexico. With most Americans continually being steered towards Cancun by word of mouth and often by travel agents, those of us that favor/boast of other Mexican locales are completely drummed out by "the horde." Americans spend a week in Cancun for their vacation, most never leave the city and a few never leave the resort, and come back home raving of their time in a foreign country and, thus, direct/inspire others to go there- repeating the cycle; of course noone realizes that Cancun is nothing like most of the rest of Mexico and that, in fact, this city that was built to cater to foreign tourists (you have to admit they did do an excellent job at that) didn't even really exist a few decades ago. Not that it is much closer to "real" Mexico anymore but Cozumel is actually my favorite spot and I continually try to persuade people to go there instead of Cancun; sometimes I succeed if I do a good enough job selling it and the only reason I think I'm somewhat successful is because at least they may have heard of Cozumel before (you'd be amazed by how many Americans haven't and/or don't know anything about even Cozumel which is a somewhat touristy place). You trying to sell most Americans on going to some place even more unknown, more "real Mexican" and more rustic seems like a near impossible task to me- I know I see you on Yahoo Answes often encouraging Americans to go elsewhere in Mexico but all I can say, without trying to sound like a smart-***, is "Good Luck!"

gheorghe makes some valid points too that not all people go to Cancun to party/etc. However, I just posted a follow-up question to yours to see why people go to Cancun.

Dan
Are u crazy?????? Cancun is beautiful, and it's definitely the best place to spend ur vacation in Mexico!!!!

Better is such a relative word. Depends on what you are looking for. Let us not forget that Cancun does not necessarily mean ignorant American students getting drunk, arrested, and stupid while on Spring Break. And there are hotels in Cancun who would not even consider that.

While Cancun is the newest resort, there are new hotels rising all the time in all the other "older" places.

Why I think Cancun is good

$$$ It is cheap - good value. You get to experience the Caribbean Sea for less - especially if you are on a budget.

Proximity to the United States - you cannot beat that if you only have a few days of vacation

Proximity to important Mayan Sites (Tulum, Chichen Itza are within driving distance)

Proximity to amusement/adventure parks - driving distance to Xel-Ha.

Proximity to Cozumel and Riviera Maya - which would be enough to give you a taste of a real Mexican experience.

And if you are really tired of Cancun's modern high-rises, you could always drive south for an hour or so to go to one of Riviera Maya's low rise, charming hotels.

Hope this helps.

Hmm...could it possibly be that this is the Canucun, Mexico subsection under the category of travel. If there were questions here asking where to go in moscow, then I would say it would be time to start asking about the subject of the questions.

My question exactly. Looking at the subject from a geographical perspective, Cancun is on the east coast of Mexico, therefore closer to Midwest and eastern states points of departure. Does this mean, logically, that it is the favorite of those states? Cancun is 100% tourist oriented, and I suspect that new hotels are more likely to pay travel agents commission, again popularized by an economic factor.

The Baja California peninsula (Mexico) has much to offer in the areas of fishing, water sports, boating, national and regional parks, hiking, mountain biking and more. Baja Norte is close to the US border and a favorite of California and Arizona visitors. The port of entry at San Ysidro is the busiest in the world. Again, from the geographical perspective the major visitor demogrpahic is from the west coast. It is a drive-in destination for day trippers and short term vacationers. In summary, which is the better zoo for you?

allknowing
I agree, but Cancun is one of the better partying places in Mexico for young people. Along with Cabo and Puerto Vallarta, but Cancun has better beaches.

School is out...Kids from the US want to go down there and "celebrate" by getting plastered and dancing all night and tanning all day. They are really not going down there to learn the culture...
